TJ Body tub lift from chassis
« on: August 10, 2015, 09:26:46 PM »

Hi all
Has anyone a link on here on how to remove a TJ body tub from the chassis.
Once unbolt ed can it be lifted. If so by how many people etc or is it too heavy.
I'm looking at lifting it pretty much straight off the chassis but will lighten it up by removing panels etc if possible.
Thanks
Ian

It's heavy with a capital 'F'!
3 man lift + 1 person to change and line up new body mounts if thats what you want to do, otherwise take it to bits.
Simple route would be something like this:
Release the front clip but support at the rear where the tub bolts up, remove doors but not tailgate. Remove the seats and carpet. Drop the fuel tank, check you have enough slack in electrical loom, disconnect brake lines at master cylinder, if it's a column shift auto disconnect the gearbox linkage, if manual don't forget the clutch lines.
I have read stories where 2 Americans can get the tub only off but they strip it down to nothing.

I used a 2 post ramp, far to heavy to even think about lifting by hand. 2 of us could slide it around just about on a trailer. It was complete though. Have you taken the doors of your and felt how much they weigh alone? If your doing a body lift you only need a high lift jack and you can lift one part at a time. Oh don't forget the 2 mounts either side just in front if the fuel tank like I did.

I stripped mine right the way down for a body off resto so wasnt worried what came off, just where to put it back.
My CJ tub is probably a fair bit lighter than your body, it's wafer thin due to rust in more places than I care to remember.
But I bet my rotten old mid 70's doors weigh more than anything from this century!
