Morning All,

I'm going to tackle some issues on the XJ today, and whilst I'm at it will be removing the steering column.

Last time I had the column out, I stupidly totally forgot about the existence of the clockspring, so I can't guarantee that the steering wheel didn't get turned whilst it was out.

After reassembly the horn still works, so I know it's not broken yet, but is there a way of checking that it's centered without removing the wheel from the column?

The process is described in the factory service manual. I can't remember which way it says to wind it to the end before winding back to center. There are online FSMs in the resource section of the morris 4x4 website where you'd find the details in the supplementary restraint section.

With the clockspring removed, from the existing centre position, turn it very gently in one direction one full turn. if you encounter any resistance stop. If not continue another turn, then gently go two turns back to centre. Then carefully make the one plus one turns in the opposite direction and back to centre. If you encounter resistance in either direction, go back to centre and make one plus one plus one turns in the opposite direction, go back to centre and repeat to make sure.

Thanks for the help guys, but my problem is that I don't have a steering wheel puller - I was hoping to centre it with the steering wheel still on the column!
I've reassembled now though and I actually think that looking back I didn't really turn the wheel last time. Fingers crossed!
