Fitting Grand Cherokee ZJ driveshafts on to a Cherokee XJ Dana 30
« on: September 17, 2015, 04:47:53 AM »

Hi,

Are the CV joint type drive shafts stronger than the UJ style ones?

How do I get the right ones? Saw new ones on the Bay for £40...

... fed up of busting UJ's, my shafts have been repaired and not quiet true so had a new UJ explode on the way to an event last weekend... getting good at road side repairs.

I'm only running 33" STT's so I'm not wanting the hassle and money of upgrading the axle (The whole XJ was £450).

Cheers Maf

I've kept D30 shafts and UJs alive with 33s and 35s so would suggest you just get a replacement set of standard shafts and some non greaseable UJs. I'm not a fan of CV joints but think the ZG ones are interchangeable with XJ shafts if you wanted to go that route.

Use quality non greasable UJs and consider them as fuses, if they're too strong you'll break something else more expensive. Carry a spare pair of shaft assemblies.

normally if the shaft throws the UJ then the shafts are toast as holes are distorted and the new UJ will just come out again.

Thanks guys...

Will replace the offending shaft and as ever use decent UJ's... they normally last a couple of years, running a front aussie locker loads them a bit more and busy collecting trophies takes its tole on the UJ's... happy days.

I've had cv type shafts in my TJ for the last 12 years and they have had serious abuse and, touch wood, never failed. I've got a front (and rear) ARB so they have been well used and have done plenty of tough French events like the Trophee Cevenol, Bois Noirs  and plenty of others with serious rock climbs. I wouldn't go back to UJ type as has been previously said they trash the drive shaft when they break.
