Gents,

I have a 96 XJ which has rather flat rear leafs (leaves?).

Would a budget lift kit with an add a leaf work, only want a mild lift to potentially go slightly larger tyres at some point in the future.

Springs off a diesel XJ will give you a small lift.
Using an add a leaf will give a harsher ride.

What about the longer shackle kits? I know Llama do them, and for £not much thought it might be worth a go, but don't wanna mess anything up?

Longer shackle kits will lift but you're lifting a tired and knackered spring... Eventually it will, if not already, look like a 'non smiley' profile......and the ride will get worse.
Lifting only the rear of the spring will nett you half the advertised length of the shackle. It might mess with the pinion angle of the diff, meaning wedges are needed under Spring to correct.

  Flat springs can't be lifted as they are at the end of their life.... Jones Spring http://www.jones-springs.co.uk/ can bring back tired springs, improve them, replace broken leafs what ever is needed... they stock standard Cherokee and Cherokee diesel ones.... so either buy new stock springs and then shackle lift or ask them about making springs to suit your needs.

I have used Jones' a few times, they have replaced broken leafs and turned them around within 24 hours.

How high are you going? What size tyres are you aiming for? How are you lifting the front?

Would suggest staying away from AAL as you have one tough leaf and over time it weakens the others and the ride is awful, better to get a complete new leaf pack imho.

Awesome advice all round ta! Don't really want much lift at all, currently mine is pretty tidy and standard looking with Grabber ATs and a snorkel, and that's about it. Don't wanna go silly, but maybe an inch or two? Was thinking just spring spacers on the front.

[General Confusion]

A set of Mansfield heavy duty springs at the rear and spacers at the front will give you a 2" lift for about £200
