CJ7 V8 304 Exhaust replacement
« on: April 20, 2018, 01:18:46 PM »

What do you guys do for new exhausts?

Get a standard one from Lighthouse?   Make your own out of parts?

I can get A44 Exhausts in Worcester to make and fit me one in stainless for £780, but they are fully booked until the middle of June...

Are you talking headers or exhaust/tailpipe or full system?

I brought my headers from Summit Racing and made my own exhaust setup

I’m making mine out of bits which isn’t the greatest but gets it running prior to getting one properly made

I have different set up so def can’t get off the shelf as y pipe won’t fit but having looked into it there doesn’t seem to be many people happy with the standard y pipe exhaust so getting one made might be the best option

I have got the standard cast iron exhaust manifolds, but need everything else (so downpipes, Y pipe, silencers, tailpipe, hangars and brackets).
(I don't know the history of the engine but it appears standard - e.g Mopar carb...)

Is there any benefit in going for new manifolds on a stock 304? If there is, I will go for it, but from reading on the internet, people seem to think there is not...

While I am here, the Worcester people are proposing to use 2.5" pipe, one "two into one" 10" x 4" x 410mm long silencer in front of the axle (instead of a Y pipe), plus a 5" round 360mm box behind the axle. Any thoughts?

Just had a look at Summit Racing

They talk about "fenderwell" headers, which I think means the pipes run down the the outside of the chassis rails (which would avoid my quadratrack clearance issues...). Anybody got experience of this setup?

Can you get the pipes over the axle or does it mean they have to exit in front of the rear wheels?

I've got a quadratrac and after lifting it couldn't find a way to have a y pipe that didn't hit the front driveshaft....

So I went the fender well route with side exhausts which I welded up myself. Was ridiculously loud with Hedmans side pipes so I've got car chemistry 'silencers' in each collector and two silencers each side and it is now bearable and hasn't caught on much off road.

If I did it again I'd run stock manifolds, as there's nowt wrong with them, skip the y pipe, run narrow 2 or 2.25" pipe each side of the quadratrac and join up in front of the rear axle with one silencer box leading to a single 3" pipe which in my mind is going to sound fantastic..

Remember side pipes sound like two rough 4 cylinders not a smooth v8, are difficult to silence and the headers get hot and leak at the head end. Use Remflex gaskets if you go that route not the ones you'll get with the headers .

Hope this helps

Just jumping in on this what are people’s thoghts on whether to run 2 into 1 singles, duals with a connecting pipe or old fashioned disks where a single pipe runs from each bank to the back

I am a way down putting in a 2 into 1 pipe but it’s a real ball ache and nearly sorted the connection point but struggling with small exhaust boxes and not too bothered about it being loud but heard a few 360’s with straight through exhaust and wouldn’t get my son to get in the jeep at that decibel!

The issue I have is I am running a 360 with an AX15 box then a Dana 300 all under a 1” above standard lift so it’s really difficult to get the osf pipe to connect over to near side and have a silencer prior to going over the axle and the angle of the rear shaft block a lot of the connection points in front of the axle.

Does having 2 singles really sound like a pair of ropey sounding 4 cylinders and is it essential to get a connection on an engine that’s not getting used for racing?

Plenty on here have heard my Jeep and are welcome to comment on the noise. I'm a bit conscious of the loudness as one my neighbours once complained. "it's not that it's that loud but I can't get my kids to sleep as their beds are vibrating"  :icon_eek:

Crossover pipes on low performance engines like these are unlikely to affect much. Been a while since I heard a cj on full length duals but I do remember it sounded great.
Here's a y pipe solution which seems popular as there is clearance under the front of the sump..

Cheers and vibrating walls is a good way to describe the noise!

I’m going to try the exhaust this weekend Andria it continues to be an arse I’ll go down the easy route and forget about balance pipe etc. Cheers
