SO whats the problem here then?

Got me suspension lift put on today :D  )
I felt like she was draging anchors, or pulling a caravan, no overheating form the engine, all gauges normal.
The example being, up the M40 85-90 cruise pleanty of pull in full time 4wd. Down the M40 max of 80, rwd only, no more power to give, started to kick down in crusie on the smalest hills, on the way up no gear changes at all in cruise
Now I know this could be a number of things, but at no time were any engine/running gear parts toughed today.
Oh an ems complaining that the stearing wheel aint straight anymore :lol:
the onluy other new bits where a new set of rims and a set of 31,s.
So any ideas? :?

Ummm.

The power issues are down to the 31" tyres.........YES they do make that much difference.

Other stuff.  I'd look at the UJ's first.  Any worn joints are gonna sound a whole lot worse once those angles get bigger. :wink:

I spose the other cause of noise from the diff could be worn pinnion bearings.  There will be more side load on them with the lift fitted.

Had 31,s AT's on the last XJ, and there wasnt much off an issue with it, was still pokey, and had no issues getting up to a decent speed. Although it has to be said that is was a little slower on 31,s but not realy that much :-k

mmm driveline vibes. 80mph??? were you in some kinda hurry??? might be duff uj,s but my money is on driveline angles.

I would start by getting the rear prop sorted. Take the front one off first so that you know what's going on with the vibes. Check the rear prop isn't binding on itself at the transfer case end ('93/94 versions have very limited flex at the front UJ) if it is, even with the pinion angle correct, fit a YJ slip yoke or later shaft assembly. Also, check the UJs are good. With the Jeep at normal ride height, look at the angle of the rear diff pinion and the rear output end of the transfer case. The centre lines of these should be parallel to each other. Adjustment is by degree shims between axle and leaf springs. Many replacement lift springs come with degree shims fitted, but they aren't necessarily the correct ones. With this set up correctly vibes at the rear should be minimal and you can then tackle the front.

Gregmo, you mention driveline angles? In my mechanical ignorance Im guessing your on about the props right?

Then drop the front prop and see if the noise goes.  That'll at least confirm which end the problem is. :wink:

what owen has neglected to tell you is that the wheels he has put on are deep offset mangels chrome jobbies, at least one of which is seriously buckled..............

the clicking from the front is more than likely the front prop, a uj knackered if you ask me.........was prob on its way & the lift has overemphasized it!

the droning is probably a front hub bearing again only showing up cos of the offset on the wheels & the 31's

the 31's are what is messing the speed up.......will also mess up the speedo reading.........

the rear prop angle is fine, but as before with the mileage this XJ has done the lift will show up any slight wear in the joints....

oh yeah, & if you insist on drivin it at 80mph, you will put it on its roof!!!
particularly as it doesnt have a front antiroll bar connected at the moment!!

centering the steering wheel isnt a probelm, just let the lift settle a bit then we can adjust it!!

Right, av taken the day off now and am gonna put the stock wheels/tyres back on, try and put the front anti roll on and take the front prop off see how it all sounds, will let you know what the score is! :D

Even with my front antiroll bar connected the xj is horrible at anything over 60-65  :lol: i think you do need to take it a bit easier mate!

Right have put the standard rims/tyres back on, if anything the sound from the front is just the same if not worse, cant get the front prop off yet as the trucks just gone to Jeep for the steering box :?:

check you have nothing sticking out on the rear hub which stops the 5 bolts from pulling it up square.

If it still runs out, maybe deep shit, not sure, but bent axle maybe  :?

rear diff whine -  I bet your lift had polly bushes on the leaves? Mine did on a good diff and they were noisy, on a worn diff they howl a bit, just change the oil and dont worry till it goes pop, .....oh wait a min, its Owen isnt it.... :lol:
