Transfer Case Swap
« on: July 07, 2006, 02:41:24 PM »

I've been thinking about this for a while now and would really like to swap my NV249 for a NV242.

Couple of questions always :)

1. Is there any special tools needed to do this or will the normal standard set of tools most people have do it?

2. In the cab, will a 242 fit happily with just a change of the cover to denote where the gear changes are?

3. Is this something that can realistically be done by a good home mechanic or is it a pro job?

4. Apart from the TC and hopefully the new cover for 2 above and the obvious fluids/gaskets would there be anything needed?

5. While doing this is there anything else that would be wise to change/check/replace while it's out?

Cheers all, I await your wisdom :)

Rikk, I'd have a word with Steve first, but I reckon the propshafts might be the wrong length for starters. Also the selector linkages and bracketry will be different.

I have done a straight swap on an XJ, bloody pain in the arse to get at the nuts on the top of the gearbox, and putting it back in is a 2 person job as the tc wont sit on a jack due to its weight distribution

Well after speaking to "The Man" He recons there should be no real problems, but will have a good check up and measure when my babies got it's legs in the air in a week or two's time.

So I thought I'd put some feelers out.
I'll post this in for sale/wanted as well but does anyone have or know of a NV242 + any linkages + the little plastic 2wd/4wd bit that goes under the lever to show what your in.
Would prefure as low mileage as possible on it if pos.

Cheers

Rikk,

I have a couple of 93 XJ's I am breaking with NP242 TC's in them.........not sure if the linkages will work with a ZJ, same with the fascia........

Both were working fine when taken off the road, let me know if you are interested. Both have done over 100k but neither had a hard life!!

check what rear oil seal you have on the grand first, if you have the short tail with the metal cover over the seal (same as mk2 xjs) the prop will chew the oil seal on MK1 XJ T/Cs. I know from experience.
