Tom Woods Greaseable Rear prop / CV Joint - vibration
« on: March 19, 2005, 12:44:47 PM »

The dealer who mot'd my TJ advised me that there was a pin missing from the front of my rear prop, and that there is excessive play in the UJ (I thought it was a CV joint).

Does anybody know the specification of the bolt I need?  And where to purchase from.

Are there any companies in the Midlands who can service / repair such joints?

My dealer has provided me with an estimate of £311.26 for the joint, £9.44 for 4 retaining pins and £77.50 for labour (approx 1 hour) + vat which totals £467.88.  I am sure there is a better value alternative.

I must add that I am not a mechanic, and do not have access to a workshop, suitable tools or anywhere to work on the Jeep other than outside and on the road.

It is one of the 4 bolts which connect the yoke to the joint.

Apologies for the poor picture, I only had access to a camera built into a phone.

It seems my first job is to discover if the bolt has sheared or has loosened and fallen out.

I could try removing one of the bolts and see if I can get something similar locally.  I know I can get bolts at work, including stainless steel, although these might not be strong enough.

Failing that, it seems like a call to Lighthouse, and take it from there.

Many thanks,

Thanks for the info.

I now know the bolt is missing, and looking at another bolt I took out, I will need to replace all of them.

Whilst I am doing that, I mights as well disconnect the prop from the yoke and ensure the joint is properly lubricated.  I just hope it is a simple job to reattach the prop to the yoke.

I shall have a word with the mechanics at work to see if they have any suitable bolts.  I know I can get bolts from the workshop, but I doubt they will take the shearing forces, and I suppose the harder stainless bolts will cause more damage to the CV block before shearing.

Ivan

If the Double Cardan is a greasable one, should be, then there are 3 grease points which require a needle adapter for your grease gun.  I need to disconnect the joint from the transfer case output shaft to reach all 3 on mine.  Easy and quick job, I do it after every offroad session.

Main thing is not to grease the slip yoke in the prop shaft until you have it reconnected else you hydraulically extend the shaft and it is bugger to get back on.

Sorry if I am teaching granny to suck eggs.

Thanks for the tip Woody.

Will save the easy one till last after I have reconnected the shaft.

Typical...

Having ascertained that the pins are 5/16" UNF 1 1/4", I ordered some from Namrick, to be delivered in time for the weekend.

I receive the packet today and ........ discover they sent me 1" pins!

I don't suppose they are open until Tuesday, when I hope to get the correct ones sent out.

Since I need to be able to drive the vehicle to the MOT station on Wednesday, I will have to see if I can purchase 4 pins from Wickes, Halfords etc, even though they are probably 10 times more expensive.

I think the 2" pins I have been given will foul the CV joint.  I could always try and cut them to size with my junior hacksaw.

Pity 30mm M8 pins arn't any good - I have loads of them at work!
