Anyone any experience of these guys:

Looking into cages at present for the Landy. BB isn't CDS, but it meets the MSA regs....

cold drawn is the stronger and i would go with that everytime. 8)

Do you know what blue band is? It's scafold tubing. It is still a structural tubing, it's also known as ERW or welded seam tubing.

ERW vs CDS
(electronic resistance welded vs. cold drawn seamless)

ERW has thin spots due to the manufacturing proccess, so you must use a thicker wall in case there is a thin spot at a bend location. CDS can get away with a thinner wall (lighter) due to it being a consistant wall thickness. BUT, ERW is used every day in nescar and alot of high speed race sports. At the end of the day cage strength comes down to design not material choice (to an extent).

The only downside to ERW in offroad use is the bend/dent strength is no where as high. (see vid) So you might dent your new cage if you lean on it againt a rock or something.

Also I've got a supplier down by london that will provide 2.6 mil CDS for 5.20 a meter.

Certainly those piccies tell a story!

I understood that CDS was significantly stronger, though a growing number of people seem to be using BB, especially for 4 x 4 cages (as it meets MSA regs, if I understand correctly). In practical terms I guess a BB cage is preferable to no cage at all, but CDS would be better and longer lasting. Part of my issue is finding people with the capability of bending CDS!

Hmmm - any other thoughts or suggestions much appreciated.

The below cage on a "Comp Safari" motor i had came from Whitbread. The truck had had an "Endover" roll before i had it and was fixed. The guy i brought it off, was amazed at how little damage to the cage structure had occurred. The hole chassis and caged was checked for deformity but was good.


Whitbread were at "Old Sodders" in October. Selling ext or int cages. Pre-fabbed, bent front and rear hoops. Personnally they look very good qaulity and are CDS. Prices were from 275-375 self install or from £500 fitted.

The piccy below is the one im going for on my 90 pick-up (excluding front fender to bumper sections)
6 point cage, standard ARC,MSA spec, nowt flash, but it is very popular choice.  


They supply 6mm plates to put at each place the tube meets the chassis. The use of a welder and a few fitting skills needed. Looking at the job ahead, check to see how good your outriggers at the front and center and rear cross members are? No point in sticking a cage on to a truck that has been attacked by the dreaded "Rust Bug"

Cheers for that - helpful. The prices you mention tie-in to what Whitbread have told me.

The CDS thing is an interesting comment, as Whitbread's own site mentions they use BB (if you look at the link, under cages)... which is where I started from...

Think I'll give Malcolm a call and see whats what!

Hooo! Looks like i must of got my wires crossed? I stand corrected....definatly states "Blue Band" on the www? At Old Sodders im sure i was told CDS?...Guess thats why the cost is lower?

But as stated, for ARC/MSA, CDS or BB needs to be 3mm thick wall to reach the required standard.

Would like to hear the outcome of ya conversation with Whitbread.
