Mines 4.10:1, just slightly deeper than stock.

I swapped in axles from a 1998 2.5 petrol XJ.

If you ever think you'll go bigger than 31's or can live with 65-70 comfortable max speed go 4.56.

My 4.0 runs 3.73s, but is manual. Returns the gearing to just about what it was with the stock 3.07. The auto XJ really needs 4.11s, which, as James said are stock on 2.5 petrol XJs.

I think 4.10:1 is the norm for 31s. I can highly recommend Mik Stansfield.

....Or buy a 2.5 4 popper for less than £500, swop the axles in, sell the rest for parts to get the money back. Free regear.

Thanks Mike...

I'm not really planning on going bigger than 31" so it looks like being a good-value mod.

I like good-value cause i'm a pikey

Good luck with your search Lefty, hope you're patient!

It was a good swap, the rear axle is bigger and stronger than a D35, especially with a Detroit and 29 spline Alloy Shafts in  :)

4.10:1 is really noticeable off-road and on road I notice the benefits of it about as often as I noticed the negatives of 3.55 and 31s - uphills, loaded up with gear, burnouts(!) etc.

After this weekend I'm now thinking D60s front and rear, 5.13s and 36"+ tyres though - luckily work is hectic so I'm distracted

I had 4.10s with my 33"s, nice combo for highway and off road. Better mileage as well. If you think you may go larger (ie 35s) think 4.56.

My Willys has 5.38s but I can't go over ~60km on the road.

I've already spoken to Mik about it.

Unfortunately I just don't have the cash at the moment - even though long-term I'll probably spend more doing less to mine
