Tubing for Roof Lights

The nights are drawing in and I need more light...

I'm going to buy 4 x-lites http://www.x-eng.co.uk/X-Lite.asp?MID=43 the 38deg floods.
The aim is to mount them on the current roof rails via 46mm ali tubing with the outside two pointing outwards.

These lights are designed to fit onto std roll cages using either 46mm or 51mm tubing, I'd like to use 46mm aluminium tubing to make the carrier for these.

Now the question, anyone know where I can buy prefurably 46mm or if not 51mm OD ali tubing?

Then need to find someone local to cut/shape/weld it all up for me.

This is whats I'm intending doing.

I'll buy another pair of roof cross members to fit onto the standard roof rails and have connectors so it can be taken off in the summer :-

Here's a tip. Many people who have fitted roof lights have had problems with glare off the bonnet. If you mount the lights far enough back so that the leading edge of the roof casts a shadow over the bonnet you won't have the problem.

Also wire them so that the side facing ones are switched separately. If you're on a lane with hedges the reflected light off the side ones will be so bright the distance you can see forward will be cut drastically. They can be very useful for tight manouvering but you'll be glad you can shut them off other times too.

yes...........it's true as with mine i have dazzle from the windscreen never mind the bonnet set them as far back as you can.

Cheers, that works well then as I can keep them back from the roofline and they'l disapear between the side roof rails :)
Good thing about having them on the standard roof rails I can move them backwards and forwards to get rid of that glare.

I did intend having the side and centre ones switched seperatly, hadn't decided wether it would be usefull or not but seemed sensible to run all the cables at once...hmm saying that I may get a 3rd set of power run just in case.

The X eng lights are 'hooded' anyway to help with dazzle - They are a nice bit of kit, Simon who owns X eng is a good friend of mine, you wont be disapointed  :lol:

Well it's come on a way and changed a bit. With lots of help from Trent it's got this far.

Just needs to be welded then I can drill the holes at the end of the xmembers and through the current roofrails.

It won't be as long as it is now, probably half of that will be cut off but untill the roof mounted section is welded up so I can mount it to see spacings etc I left it a bit long.

Also when I can finally convince Hella to sell me a single light they'l be one in the centre as well. So the driving lights on the outside for distance and the three fogs in the middle should give 180 degree coverage out to 20-30m

Would have been welded up as well but sadly the welder we borrowed was very good at tripping fuses and not much upto the welding bit.

The lights; are they Hella FF75's?; if so where did you get them from? I was looking for a set a while back.
I like their low profile look- very neat!

Cheers, was aiming for them to be as low as possible as doing a lot of tight laning big and upright woulnd't last long, also I like getting into carparks ;)

Yep they are Hella FF75 they came from demontweaks, took a couple of weeks for them to get them though.

Still trying to find some waterproof plugs to allow me to connect/disconnect the wiring as they are designed to be taken off.

ive got some light like those but the ones from halfords that give the blue ice white beam. very good at illuminating the road, the downside is they drain the battery very fast if left switched on and the engine off
