Does anyone know where the headlight relay is located on a 1993 XJ. I have a feeling that it is in the relay box under the dash to the left of the steering column, but I don't know which one it is.

Got no headlights at the moment s a swift reply would be appreciated

Can't find a relay on the wiring diagrams. Could be the switch (they're shit), or Fuse 5 under the bonnet in the power distribution centre 40 amp, orange.

I have put a new switch on today and the problem is still there. Main beam works on the column, but will not lock on. Headlights come on occassionaly and I can hear a clicking under the dash.

This problem started with the headlights flashing on and off whilst driving.

Certainly sounds like a relay, but I'm buggered if I can find it! Sorry mate.

OK, try this PDF. Evidence suggests that the culprit might be the headlight delay module (a glorified relay), which on a LHD is near the headlight switch.

swapped the origional switch on mine as it was suspect, nice to see they were made out of bakalite. the new replacements are now a resin plastic mix, didn't realise there was a relay as well near to it. If i alter the dimmer switch from full on to variable the fuse blows so i suspect something else but with such a limited space in there i'll be dammed if i'm looking for the problem just yet

Came back from Evesham tonight - first trip out in the dark in my Mitsubishi J20. Switched on windscreen smearers and the headlights went out - just as we approached a roundabout. - Made my long suffering girlfriend sit-up and comment on my excellant (?) taste in transportation! Bernard

is the relay of a std make or is it specific to jeep ?, mine has started to flash the headlamps after 1/2 hr of being switched on

There is not a headlight relay. Further investigation with mine has found that the connector on the top of the headlight switch is getting hot. Mine also lasts about 1/2 an hour before the problem starts. I am thinking of putting higher amperage connectors on the switch.

Put your hand up under the dash and feel the top of the headlight switch.

That's standard. The switch and connections often overheat. To stop it happening, replace the switch and connectors as necessary and then rewire after the swith with a relay to take the load off it.

might be the connections as the switch is new, does anyone have a relevant wiring diagram, for the terminal connections so to make things easy. the haynes might be a bit vague or is it safe to copy from it ?

without looking at the wiring diagram i am assuming there is only one 12v supply to the switch. using a 4 pin latching relay (same type used for spot lamps) one circuit is connected to a switched supply (ignition) and the othe makes the connection from the 12v supply to the switch
