detroit e z locker
« on: March 04, 2007, 07:17:00 PM »

well what do you guys know or have heard about these i have just fitted one to the rear of the gt
they are very simple to fit in fact you could almost throw it from a hundred yds its that simple you dont disturb any bearings so there is no isues on that score
and they are cheap
but
i am not sure if this unit is a faulty one or if they are just shit i wouldnt think detroit would put there name to a hunkajunk
the unit locks and unlocks with a loud bang and a jerk while driving in a straight line and does not settle down going uphill it s very violent in operation not as you would want or expect it locks and unlocks on bends and junctions as you would expect
it apears to work corectly on the dirt
now heres the thing it drives like i have got a 35 and a 31 on the same axel
they are both the same size and have less than thousand miles on them  bot inflated to 28psi the jeeps not bent the axel bearings and set up is fine
now i know its not just me not used to it as my scrambler has no slips so i am well used to these style of locker i do know of at least one other  such case like this
this thing is so simple you just cant fit it wrong  but it is very violent in operation and not operating corectly and there is nothing you can adjust so guys over to you o and dont tell me i should buy an arb cus i ant aford them not in this life or the next

I fitted a NoSlip to the rear of my XJ and the thing didn't work properly. It was definitely the right type for the diff fitted but it used to go bang and lose all drive without any warning. I never got it sorted and took it out again. I could only put it down to the carrier being worn (245000 miles) so the two halves of the Noslip assembly were a bit too far apart resulting in the strange behavior. It always checked out alright when testing it on jacks but wouldn't work properly when driving. I refitted it twice and contracted the manufacturer but without seeing it assembled in the diff they couldn't help me further so I gave up and sold it.  I also had problems with one in my YJ, this one was definitely down to carrier wear.

In the US the EZ locker is considered less desirable than a lockright, no-slip or Aussie locker but I don't think it's considered junk - more that's it's less smooth and a bit weaker.

How many miles have you done on it? I ask because my Detroit acted like a milder version of what you're describing for the first 20 miles or so but seems much better now.

Manual gearboxes and shorter wheel bases are supposed to make the clunks and jerks more noticeable but what you're describing sounds a bit beyond normal operation.

it seems strange that it is so close in design to the no-spin and is being so mad. bubba has the no-spin,s in the scrambler and they are no probs.
