I have a 1979 5.9 AMC CJ7.It has the AMC 20 rear axle in it with the one piece shafts.I am about to replace a rear inner oil seal. Before I order the parts, i have a question.Upon inspection,it seems like the outer seal retainer(dust seal) is missing on the side that is weeping oil.If i crawl under the other side with an inspection mirror,i can clearly see the outer retainer,as also described in the manual.
Is this part normally used on one piece axle installations?
I am only asking, as looking at Quadratec and Ebay sellers, all pictures of the one piece axle kits have the bearing, bearing cup, bearing collar( or inner retainer),inner seal and outer seal, but no mention or picture of the outer seal retainer. Is this because it is always re-used or just not used?
Many thanks for your help people, and apologies for so many questions. The thing is,I have a friend flying over from Ohio at the end of this month, and am trying to get enough information together so he can bring them in and save me a few pounds!!
