Springs

Hi guys

Had a look at my rear springs today.  What should they look like?  Mine are flat, should they be a bit curved?

Expect to pay between 200 and 250 quid for new springs and hardware. So you should maybe ask yourself if you will lift it anytime in the future, and if you think you might, then maybe you should do it now, rather than spend money on replacement springs only to replace them too.

Loads of options with lifts but given the exchange rate at the moment I'd order it direct from the states.

Some brands are: Pro-comp, Rustys Offroad, Rubicon Express, Old Man Emu, Skyjacker. There are plenty more as well. They vary in price, quality, ride comfort (hard/soft).

Alternatively get some diesel cherokee springs (1" higher and heavy duty) from a UK supplier and just replace the leaves. If you go for a lift later you can probably sell these on again.

I've done both of these things so feel free to ask any questions you may have.

I'm with James, importing is the best option.

However, there are plenty of other considerations.

Is it a daily drive - do you want to change the suspension characteristics?
Do you want to pay out for new tyres and possibly new wheels?
Do you want the extra noise of non-road tyres?
Is climbing up into the truck going to be a problem?
Are you feeling flush?  :lol:

I wouldn't wanna use my XJ as a daily drive - it's too thirsty for a start, but I filthy my trousers every time I get in or out cus I scrape the sill with my leg - and I'm not short!
I'm not trying to put you off - far from it (we love spending your money on Birty's), rather I'm pointing out things to take into consideration.
I also went the diesel spring route, and then sold them on.

Got to agree with what's been said so far.

However, before you get put off; I ran my XJ with a 3" Skyjacker lift and BFG ATs for a while and I have to say, she looked much better and performed off road much better but still handled well on the road (not as great as standard but still miles better than a disco) and there wasn't much noise from the tyres either. :wink:

if you dont want to lift but firm it up try diesel springs you may get them s/hand they will give a smidge of rear end lift

I've put my sensible head back on, so I'm moving away from the lift idea.  At the end of the day it's my wife's dailly runabout, so I don't wana risk making the handling in anyway tricky.  A bit of greenlaning is the most it's ever going to do, so it doesn't really need a lift.  Any rough offroading is done in my battered old Suzuki.
I've had a very quick look on the internet and Mansfield 4X4 do a set of standard ones for about £185 delivered.  Does this sound about right, and has anyone ever dealt with the company?

lighthouse will sell you a set for less than mansfield don't forget you will need front and rear bushes as well. and there is postage as well

Other members have used Mansfield 4x4, I think the price is pretty good.

You can make a Cherokee with 6" of lift work well on the road - it just costs :P    Either that or develop 'the leap'.

lighthouse price for springs around the £140 mark but no delivery and vat plus you will need bushes adding to it

Isnt there a spring manufacturer near you (look in phone book) i had my leafs made by a local spring maker with extra curve giving a 3"lift (~£130 for a pair).
