Transmission Fluid advice.
« on: August 09, 2008, 06:11:56 PM »

Hi There gents and likeminded screw the environment people (only kidding)

Total newbee to 4x4 but the first time I used her to pull my boat out of the water up a slippery ramp I was sold and in love. This is the dogs dangly bits for my requirements and all the cra* spouted forth about unreliability has so far been hot air.

I have just got a 82k mileage 99R Jeep Grand 4.0l ltd auto with Quadratrac and had it through the first MOT in my ownership. It failed!!!! but only on handbrake and rear braking tolerence. New discs, pads and handbrake shoes new MOT. An advisory was the pitted fronts so have changed them too.

A new radiator and at the same time new alternator belt and so far no major issues. Just a point though Jeep brakes do not like salt water. It appears that previous owner may have recovered boats with jeep in the water. Although MOT man says underside is first class so maybe only back wheels.

All is well? No not quite. Fluids and changes are the next thing. OMG I have had a quote for about £320 for auto box fluid change!

I need assistance with correct fluid and the local stealership seemed a little unsure but said I should have ATF+4 and looking for it I find that this is a Jeep monopoly or Redline at £13 per quart (0.9 liter approx)

Questions:
1 Correct fluid for this car been told it is a ZG? Supplier in UK!
2 Correct fluid and quantity for Transfer box.
3 Correct Fluid and quantity for diffs.
4 Suggested mods as I only want to tow my boat with vehicle.
5 Suggested lay up advice as the car sits for a long time without use, although taxed and mot'd. Brakes do suffer when not in use daily.

I have already done one journey with the boat which weighs about 1.5 tonnes and average mpg was 19.8 mpg over 450 miles and I can live with that. This journey was a mixture of motorway and rural roads in west of Scotland.

Please help guys to find realistic prices for the fluids for my car as she needs lubricated to get her silky smooth.

Sorry for any blantantly stupid questions but I do not even have an owners manual for the car.

Not stupid questions..just very sensible ones

Others will post answers on fluid/type/qty's etc but I'll just say MPG is realistic..

From Haynes

Front Diff Dana 30 is 3.1pints SAE 75W-90 API GL-5

Rear Dana 35 3.1 pints

Auto Transmission Mopar Plus 4 ATF or equivalent

you will find you have a factors somewhere near you that supply the local workshops with fluids and don't be afraid to buy in larger quantities not the litre bottles that halfrauds sell i buy atf and engine oil in fve gallon drums its cheaper that way

Hi Guys,
Many thanks for the warm welcome. The is sooooooh good it makes me want to take to the rough stuff again as I did in Libya some 20 odd years ago. We had special site vehicles and they were...................................? Wait for it

Fiat 127 Rustica Roll cage, roo bars, knobbly tyres. rally lights,
sump guard, and a mildly tuned engine. These were so much fun and went like shi* off the proverbial shovel.

Ideally i need to know what model I have XJ XG wJ WG what ever! I found that so far Mansfield 4x4 have been very good and advised perfectly but they do not show ATF 4.

Where do you guys get it from????????????????????

I was going to start a new thread on this but it's so closely related I'm hoping the experts will be able to answer both at once.

Started my 100,000 rebuild today just a couple of little easy jobs to ease me back into the spanners ( haven't done much for a couple of years) and to make things easier I took a trip to the factors to make sure I had everything I'd need, as the last thing I want is to be stuck at my garage which is about 12 miles from home and not be able to get bits on a sat/sun.  I knew I had a few litres of 75/90 in the shop so I proceeded to change the rear diff cover to a nice "Solid" one and change the oil.  Took the old cover off, drained and then realised my oil was GL4 and not GL5 as specced.

Ruined the afternoons work as I spent an hour on the net trying to see wether I could get home.  Decided I'd be OK but what I'd like to know is how long I can run with the GL4 and not do any serious damage or can I just leave it alone?

Sorry if this is a bit of a hijack!
