hand brake
« on: September 23, 2007, 08:14:25 PM »

does anyone know if its legal to run a hydraulic handbrake or if i can even get away with not having one at all since my cherry's an auto?

im disk converting the portals an it uses landrover disks an calipers so there's no handbrake, cos landys only having a transmition brake. :?

my options at the moment are hydralic or to leave the rear on drums till after the mot and then convert it so ive got a year to work something out

you have to have a handbrake for MOT purposes, since the xj ones are useless anything will be an improvement. serviced mine to pass a MOT now it's useless and that's after using just under 5 times so i dont bother. as for landy's they use a brake fitted to the prop shaft. hydraulic handbrakes are not the norm and not type approved for normal car use. you could set one up and see if the MOT station realises the set up and passes it. If it holds a brake pressure to the required value then it should pass. it's a case of suck it and see. But you have to have a fitted working handbrake or it's no MOT cert.

You must have a handbrake to pass an MoT. It is also considered an emergency brake and should have a totally separate operating mechanism from the service brake. The tester won't be looking for this however so you might get away with it.

A stand alone hydraulic parking brake is not allowed.

you can get "fly off" hydraulic handbrakes for rallying/auto testing, these obviously dont have a ratchet mechanism and are not legal for road use.
if you sort out a hydraulic system this can be done with some adaptors that can be bought, but the MOT tester will look for "how many ratchets" it takes on the handbrake for it to work, and know with computer reference for weight and brake effort it might be harder to get through an MOT. but with some carefull engineering you could do it. but it will be a 50-50 chance of passing and depending on the MOT testers experience

I bet an X5 has got the same type of rear braking setup as any 5 or 7 series car, be daft not to really, so you may be able to engineer something using BM bits. Some of the larger BMWs put out quite a bit of torque so should be OK for a Jeep!
In essence the hub has a small drum with a filthy great disk hanging on the outsde, the handbrake operates in the drum with main braking using the disk, all neat and compact but not sure if you can make it all fit.
Have fun   :!:
