Ive just had a quote to repair the dodgy steering on my Grand, it came to £2600

OSF CV joint (boot off, joint dry)
Power steering box leaking
Play in NSF track end
Play in NSF lower arm bush
Front diff leaking and whining
steering damper bushes unservicable
Play in NSF ball joints
Drag bar ball joint play
Antiroll D bushes worn
Play in rear axle tie bushes
Play in rear shock bushes
Excess end float in OSR axle end
Leak from transfer box and engine
Missfire on engine

Is there any way this can be done cheaper?

It was a 4x4 specialist, its the second one Ive been to with it, the first one just shook his head and said "its not a job we would do here" I told this place that if it was over £500 I wouldn't have anything done, so he had no reason to lie about it. If I fitted a new front axle what else would I still have to do and would the diesel axle offered above fit my 4.0?

Most of those problems should not cause 'dodgy' steering.

As for the term play, this is a little vague. We have new/nearly new cars and vans at work that have 'play' in some components.

Well I dont know what to do then, I dont want to get rid of the car as I love it but I am useless at anything mechanical. Its not just wobbley steering, the car limps on full lock, the missfire is annoying. Does anyone have a starter motor I could buy? Im going on Holiday in it to Tenby tomorrow, if anyone in South Wales has one going spare I could pick it up, at the moment I have to hit the solenoid with a hammer to start it

Still dont know what Jeep you have, but assuming it's a stock ZG 4.0, £2600 is probably more than it's worth. However it stil looks as if your problems haven't necessarily been diagnosed properly anyway.

What exactly do you mean by steering wobble? Is it there all the time? is it severe or slight? Speed related? A continuous speed related wobble is likeley to be wheel balance or a faulty tyre carcass.

If the Jeep seems to hop and it feels like you have to fight the steering on full lock, the viscous coupling in the transfer case could be siezed, which is a common problem. A quick way of checking this is to remove the front propshaft and see if the problem goes away.

An intermittant misfire on only one cylinder would probably be ignition related, plugs/leads/dizzy cap.

The CV joint, if it isn't making nasty noises on full lock, remove, clean it out, regrease and fit a new boot.

The worn joints and bushes could contribute to steering shake, replace as necessary, I think a diesel front axle will be the wrong ratio for a 4.0.  

A starter from a 97 on XJ or a TJ will fit if you can't find a Zg one.

To part exchange it you have to have more money to buy a better car! The wobble is the death rattles ie when I hit a bump it can rattle so much I nearly loose control and have to steadily slow down to rescue it. Its loosing water as well, I think the head gasket has blown, I lobbed in some K seal and that made it run a bit better but now I think its loosing water from the water pump.

Assuming your Jeep is unmodified, the DW is most likeley to be down to worn steering damper and its mounting bushes and/or the worn rod ends. Unbolt one end of the steering damper and try to compress and extend it by hand. You should get quite a lot of resistance through the full range of travel. If not or in doubt, replace it, they're not expensive and come with the mounting bushes as well. Once the damper is known to be good, replace the worn rod ends and bushes at the front and the problem should be sorted.

I don't see anything on your list that should stop you having a go as it were. Even if you make a complete balls of it the guys on here will help you get it back together for a lot less than £2.6k
 Hell they'd probably start a special thread for your rebuild or even one of them sticky, tacky, thingys and then just think how chuffed you'd be when you'd fixed it yourself.

Well it got me to tenby and back with a big caravan in tow (phew!) I would love to fix it myself but its my daily driver and I cant have bits of car all over my drive way for weeks. I'll have to take a loss on this one and try and find a decent cherry with the money I get for it. Any offers?
