Just wandering around !!!!!
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:16:12 PM »

Hi guys,

anyone got any hints or tips on how to tighten up the steering on a 1998 cherokee ???

My one seems to wander all over the place on the motorway and you have to concentrate like mad to keep it in a straight line

The track rod ends have no play in them at all but I can move the steering wheel quite a bit each way until the wheels turn.....

any help welcome......

Is it still stock tire size?
If larger than stock, you may want to increase toe in a little.

The other thing could be slightly bent components.  (tie rod/drag link)  I'm not entirely sure if you guys have as many options for steering upgrades as us left hand drive folks, but it was night and day when I went from the OE stuff to the Currie steering.
(I didn't think it was that bad, but my wife wouldn't drive it on the highway.)

Another possibility could be the front track bar, but that usually manifests itself with some crazy death wobble.

Good luck.

OK that all sounds really good but I dint understand half of it.....

I did understand that you may have inadvertantly compared my highway driving ability to your wifes  :?:

there should be an adjuster on the steering box.
loosen the lock nut and adjust the screw.
check when your done you dont have any tight spots in steering.
