Are they crap? Mine seem to be, I've taken to driving round with full beams on, and no-one's flashed me yet! What's a good upgrade?

I wired in a relay system. Basically the stock wiring between the battery and the bulbs is c**p. Lose loads of power.

So i wired in a system that takes juice straight from the battery to the lights. The headlight switch just opens the relay. Much better.

1. Make sure the reflectors are in good nick and the glasses aren't steamed up, if they're knackered get new headlamp units.
2. Rewiring the headlamp and main beam circuits with two 30A relays direct from the battery ensures there is minimal resistance in the headlamp circuit and takes the load off the notoriously weak stock healamp switch and wiring
3. Once you've rewired, the circuit is then up to taking high wattage bulbs. I have 90/100W in mine. Headlamps are now great. (and yes I know they're illegal but if they're adjusted properly they don't dazzle anyone so who cares)

Or if you don't want to re-wire, then try a pair of these http://http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_detail.asp?prod=45 - you should be able to pick them up from your local motor factor.

Fitting a pair of these to Mrs M's XJ made a significant difference AND they are 100% legal (i.e. not blue) and rated the same as your stock bulbs.  Much better beam pattern too.
