tranfer box jamming?

HI all hope you all had a good xmas can anyone help me I put my 4ltr Cherokee into low drive the other day to try to pull a big lump [don't ask] but it failed so I put it back into 2wheel high as I thought but when I drove it up the road it made one hell of a noise got hot i.e transmission /front axle having checked to see if the selector shaft had slipped which it had'nt next step was to put it upon the ramp the front prop/axle was hot and solid so I thought I'd take the prop off on doing this the transfer box let go , can anyone suggest what caused this to happen , Is there a certain way to select and deselect 4wheel drive and low gears ,regds Steve

on initial response sounds like a sticking shift system and lack of use. give the linkages by the side of the gear box a good soaking in wd40 and try again and eventually it will start to work. lack of use causes the system to stick and not shift properly.

but it sounds like you have broken something, have you checked the oil in the front diff meaning is there any ?

check what oil is in your transfer aswell.

it needs to be ATF, it doesn't like anthing else altho it will run fine forever in 2wd an shift into 4low with out a problem but it wont want to come out an got back to 2wd! or even 4hi

i ran mine on ep90 for ages cos i could'nt be bothered to change it, each time i went off road it took forever to get it out of 4 lo, back an forth, round an round, stopping starting, best ting i found was to let it cool down a bit an it wasn't as bad but still wasn't right.

an yes it sounds like something could of broke too. just give it a whirl an see what happens.

if your worried about the cost of replacement, look on ebay as the transfer boxes and gearboxes do go for sale and are not that expensive in comparison to when you get a garage to source one for you

I did first think that the linkage was siesed but it was'nt now that it's back in 2wheel it's been ok I did have need to put it into 4 wheel hi two day's ago and it worked fine but it was for only a short distance,all the oils are ok as they had been checked and topped up in the last week or so

you should have no problem with 4wd high. the engine will not be revvy when you accelerate. the more you use it the better. just keep switching between the 4wd high and 2wd high. when it is working fine the drive selection should be smooth and quick. sometimes it may take a couple of seconds of the need to lift your foot off the gas and back on again (manuals advise you to do this anyway)

still no clue on why the box and axle were hot to touch

HI all as I'm new to all this 4x4 would tyre sizes make a difference ie 235/75 /15 chunkies on the rear 225/70/15 on the front??

Your rear tyre diameter is 9mm less than the front. With that tyre size difference, if you drove it a mile in 4wd, the rear propshaft will have tried to turn about 35 revolutions more than the front, causing massive driveline windup and making it impossible to change out of 4wd into 2wd until the srain is removed by lifting the wheels off the ground.
