tapping noise
« on: February 04, 2008, 08:54:13 PM »

hi guys.
on my 97 2.5td xj i'm getting a tapping noise, it's worse when just started from cold but disappears after a few second, then it is always there when exelerating untill i get to 2000rpm then it goes. I have checked for play in the push rods as it sounds like a hydrolic tappet, i found a small amount of play in 3 of them so just removed rockers and turned push rods around. Cured the play but noise still there.
Do they have a hydrolic tensioner on the timming chain and are they common to go, or do you guys think this is a tappet problem.
Any help would be much needed as this noise is driving me mad.
cheers
P.S
transfer case chain was replaced in about 2 hour's, couldn't believe how easy it was. (i love jeep engineering)

Any other symptoms? Low power, misfiring, excessive smoke? (if so, what colour?)

Could be chuffin' from an exhaust manifold gasket.

i thought about the manifold gskt  but noise seems more internal.
No lack of power or exesive smoke. still drives fine

Aside from a top end problem, could be an injector or injection jump issue. If it were me, I'd get my stethoscope on the engine.

Or you could do what I saw some knob cheeses doing today..... Running on front of a Ford Ka while his mate drove it slowly down the road with the bonnet up cus they were looking for a 'noise'.

Anyway, back to the point.....

He was running sideways against the wing. Obviously too clever to be in front as his mate, driving blind, approached a stationary volvo.

i,m having parameters of the injector pump checked next week, if the blokes diagnostic machine can read it.
My snap on machine will not read it or the crypton at work doesn't even list a jeep xj diesel.
I think it may be over fueling on start up when cold, but if it was all the time it would knock not tap.
does the jeep have a hydrolic timing chain tensioner or are they done with a spring?
