Leaking Cherokee (windscreen???)
« on: January 21, 2008, 11:31:54 AM »

1999 Cherokee

Hi. I've noticed a small pool of water on the passenger side rubber mat a couple of times recently following this crumby weather. At first I thought it was from people getting in with wet feet but I now know it's a leak.

I looked through the service bumf and found out that it had a leaking windscreen repaired a few years ago by being re-bonded. I was wondering if it is possible to use mastic as I've done in the past with older cars?

But maybe the water is from somewhere else? I took the plenum (?) cover of under the windscreen wipers and that was as clean as a whistle.

Many thanks,

Mike.

PS: I've tried for hours to replicate the leak with a watering can but can't get the thing to leak.

It might be worth checking that your aircon is draining properly too, as that can cause the same symptoms when the drain is blocked or damaged.  You may not be using an aircon setting, but the aircon is switched on when you select one of the demist settings - so it will still de-humidify the air, and chuck it out of the bottom.

The drain pipe comes out of the chassis member, directly under the passenger footwell.  I suggest that you go for a run with the aircon on, and then park up somewhere that's dry.  If you don't have a puddle forming underneath the passenger footwell, then that may be your problem.

this is a classic with modern cars, jaguar had this as a concern with the prot xk8. the tube kept on being blocked then it filled up and leaked into the foot wells.

  Mental bastard.  I remember my Capri 280. Great and shite at the same time.
One guy once said "If a Capri left the Ford factory without an oil leak it had to go back to get one fitted"
