Cigar lighter socket
« on: March 25, 2008, 01:01:22 PM »

I have a 56 reg 2.8 ltd Cherokee and tried running hair straightener thingys from an inverter plugged into the cigar lighter. We were in our caravan and my missus and daughters would'nt stop moaning about doing their hair (after I couldn't get my generator running).

Anyway the inverter thing kept bleeping cos I think it was overloaded, fair enough. But now both cigar lighter sockets won't work at all and a yellow warning light appeared on the dash (shape of an engine) for a day (could be coincidence it's now disappeared).

Visually all of the fuses look good, could it be anything else?

I would appreciate any help.

Thats a tricky one, I would suspect that your managment light coming on was a coincidence, hopefully, but I would first check the fuse/s for the power sockets make sure they are ok and of the correct rating, check with a multimeter or something similar, visual dont always prove blown, if you have an owners manual with the fuse chart in it check see whether that circuit feeds anything else other than the sockets whick may have caused the light to come on, presumably if there was a fault the light would stay illuminated but as its now gone out and the jeep I assume drives ok, then also check the manual for relays, power sockets I assume maybe fed from one and it may be buggered. if your still stuck then maybe a dignostic check, see what trouble codes the ecu has stored.

Hope this helps :grinyes:

the engine light comes on when you put a lot of draw on the electrics sometimes. I've seen it happen when winching. dw is right to say test the fuses or even swap em out for new ones. you might find it is a big fuse under the hood rather than the little ones in the board. good luck. i hate electric troubles. if the engine light has stayed off don't worry about it. it will stay on if there is  serious problem. 8-)

My Ranger had a funny with the fag lighter. Plugged one of those little 150W heaters in, and after a while it stopped working. The 12v socket was fine though, just the fag lighter socket was broke. Turned out to be that the backlight was also a thermal fuse which had blown - I guess a safety measure if the fag lighter doesn't pop out. Bypassed the backlight/fuse and it was OK.

this amazes me as to why people use the fag lighter to power everything and then use the damm thing to jump start a car. The wires to the lighter are not high capacity types. if you want to run an auxillary socket then wire one in seperatly with some decent thick wire and have it fused. this will then save on melting the wiring loom from the origional lighter socket.

hair straighteners through a invertor then a fag lighter, bin the invertor or hard wire it.
