Heating coils

Hi guys if any of you have read the off road events and seen the jeep in the corwen car wash im the owner who got rescued.Im new to jeeps and green laning and i need to check the heating coils as the cherokee doesnt seem to start as she used to,she does start but not as crisp if you get my drift.Where bouts are the coils and are they easy to remove and clean and replace,thats how new i am,my impression is that they would be where the spark plugs normally go,am i correct in assumming this.Any advice would be helpful.Its a 1998 jeep cherokee turbo diesel.Cheers  [jeepguy]

the heater coils are called glow plugs (no offence), they are located at the top of the engine. If you look for the metal pipes that come out of the fuel injector pump and follow them until they go into the top of the engine, above  the injector you should see a black cap with a large wire comming from it. There should be four of these with their own cable. pull the black cap off and you should see the glow plug. use a socket to take them out and see what state they are in. They should be in a clean brown burnt appearence if they are black and oily then they might be us. another way of trying is to connect them to an electrical supply and see if they get warm. Only connect for a very short time 3 secs or so (the time it takes for the heater light to go out on the dash board). You should be able to feel the heat i am not sure if they get to the point of literally glowing, if that's the case dont touch it.
 talk to the VM specialist in chesterfield for prices of needed spares the number is on this site soemwhere or just do a tinternet search

They should glow when they are tested. You say it does start, does it turn over for a while before firing or does it start straight away but misfire?
