grand cherokee 4 litre engine?
« on: May 05, 2008, 07:48:07 PM »

Hello

I have a 1997 (R reg) Grand Cherokee LTD auto.
The engine has developed a knock.

I still don't know exactly what is causig it, but I am certain that it is not the rockers or valves, and it isn't any of the anciliaries.
I have also checked the timing chain and tat is OK too.
I have concluded that it is either a big or little end, and as such am looking for a replacement engine.

Can anyone point me to reference which will tell me which engines are comatible?
For example, would a lump from a '96 Cherokee fit?
The engine doesn't appear to be very high tech, so I am hoping that it remained un-changed for a fairly long period.

Thanks in advance

You want one from:
96-98 Grand Cherokee
96-99 Wrangler
96-99 Cherokee

4 litre engines are 10 a penny at the moment sou you should get a good one for around £300-400

Thanks Mike.
That's what I was hoping for, ... a nice simple answer.

You will have to swap some ancillaries around like pulleys and the like if you go for Cherokee or Wrangler but the basic engine from these year vehicles will be identical.
