you can go with shackles and spring spacers but you will need longer shocks if you want it to flex. you might also get some driveline vibes so you will need to sort that too.

you can go as high as 8"'s on a xj but driveline needs to be altered and the steering as well. but if you can afford the lift in the first place the rest isn't an issue

your shocks will bottom out if you fit shackles and spacers. the shocks you have with your existing lift are to go with the amount of travel that the springs will allow. if you fit spacers you are adding to your lift and you will get less tuck and more droop than you have now. i have seen exactly what you are talking about in practice. just grab some longer shocks from pro comp and you are sorted. 8-)

I ran exactly the setup you are talking about - I'd be surprised if it ended up over 4", mine was about 3.5" because of the softness of the OME springs.

I fitted extended shackles and front coil spacers and added shock absorber Bar Pin Eliminators that move the shock mounting 1.25" closer (see http://http://www.rocky.road.com).

This gave me a pretty good setup for 31" tyres. Extras I added were Rubicon Express lower control arms with a flex joint and I adjusted the front brakelines for a bit more length (by straightening the Z in the hard line). I fitted an extended brakeline in the rear.

This is a picture of that setup last year:

Having built a few cherokees I think your best bet is to leave the suspension where it is at.  Make a new cross member that will tuck the drivetrain up flat with the underside of the rig.  I do this with all of my rigs, and it helps me drive right over things that rigs with the same lift get high centered on.  Should be a really easy bit of fab work.
I can post pics of mine if you like.

Just to make this clear for myself, you've basically raised the bottom of the x-member up by cutting out more from the middle?

Sounds like a brilliant idea. I've managed to bend my x-member so that looks like a good alternative. Only 1 question, how have you strengthened the middle bit with the hole in?
