CB Antenna mounts....Mag or body mount GC ZJ
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:07:57 PM »

HI everyone,

Everything else is in now CB wise expect the antenna mount...Do i go for a mag mount on the roof or a body mount and drill the roof? I was going to go for a side body mount but they may get caught on stuff and on the roof will give me better signal i guess.

Bit worried the roof may get bent up if the ariel gets caught whilst fitted in the drilled body mount. Any ever heard of this?

Is the mag mount likely to stay put (I wouldn't expect it to if going through tree's / bushes etc.

If anyone has any pics of roof mount antennas on a GC i'd appriciate seeing them.

Cheers

i started off with the simple gutter mount this works in principle but it is utter crap, you can receive but the transmitting signal is crap. dont even think about buying one even for cheapness.
i did think on the mag-mount which are good but i didn't know what to do with the cable, i just wanted to fit the aerial and go, the mag mount left a cable hanging "so to speak" in the back of the jeep.
I went for a wing mount which involved two holes to be drilled and job done. I made my own cable to go from the mount to the CB and hid it in the plastic trim of the roof lining.
when fitted this gave good signal strength on transmitting where i used to have next to nothing. plus all i do is unscrew the aerial when it's not needed
drilling the roof wasn't an option as the can be a nightmare to get a permenant seal

Magmount on the middle of the roof. Mid-roof gives the good earth properties you need. Mag-mount cus if you go laning and get attacked by a tree, the magmount will come off, whereas a drilled mount will bend your body panel.

yep it's the side mount at the top of the page but i got mine from fleabay for less money. mine is mounted on the rear quater panel just behind the rear window, low enough not to be a problem but still gives good signal strength. On the xj i had to put a piece of neoprene on the tail gate as the coil from the aerial bounced against the tailgate which could result in paint being worn off

I used to have a mag mount but got fed up putting it on and taking it off all the time. Maybe I'm just lazy!!
I've now got a roof mounted antenna slap bang in the middle of the roof but slightly towards the rear, just used a lot of silicon to make sure no rainwater gets through. Also got a quick release link so that I can remove it easily whenever I want to.
Works fab!
