My 97 XJ has the EGR valve blanked off, but i bought it that way so i cannot comment if it made any difference to performance.
Mine used to do a great impression of the FAB1's smoke screen when under load going up hills etc, but that turned out to be lack of inlet manifold gasket  obviously previous owner like a little dabble !!
The AA man ( don't ask but involved lack of Battery power) said he had seen  loads of vehicles with blanked off EGR especially older vehicles and he has even done the mod to his own diesel.
i guess just blank it off and make your own conclusions as to effectiveness

Alot of Oz owners have done this, search thru the site below, there's lots of info here, but I think they do it because their deisel fuel is not as high quality as ours.

On the aus site they say about removing the vac pipe to disable it.

I did this a week ago - not much difference in power etc - perhaps a slight improvement.

But think I may have lost over 2MPG (over 10%

One thing with modding as the aus site it is only a 10 minute job 8-)

My 01 VM diesel has 92k on the clock now, I run it on Shell V Power, even though it's like £1.35 a litre, the engine seems to love it, even with 4.5" lift Ponyracers Mil Spec winch bumper w/EP9 winch, 3.73 gears, and 31's, my dawg, wife, 2 kids and the trunk area full to the top with camping crap and toys, I STILL get 26-27 MPG, average.  I'm happy with that so I'll not do this mod.  I change the engine oil like every 2k, and use Castrol Magnatec and mopar filter.  Look after the truck, and it will look after you right?.

the egr valve is used for cold starting and cutting out the smoke on startup. blanking it off should do anything to affect engine performance
