Having a serious go at the oil burner soon and first on the list are the clutch packs in the rear axle.

has the diff got to come out of the axle or do they just slip in somehow?
And I gotta do the pinion oil seal too! but do I need a new crush washer in there as well??

IIRC the clutch packs are about 136 quidlies plus vat for the dana 35, (from a dealer) then you gotta pay someone unless you wanna attempt it yourself.  What I did was buy a TrueTrac, in my opinion better than the stock diff, and probably cheaper than a rebuild, as yes the diff has to come out.

The pinion seal can be replaced without needing to remove the pinion itself, about 1/2 - 1 hours work, so you don't need a crush sleeve.

but you done gotta be  careful you dont over tighten when you put the yoke bake on otherwise you will be in to a full on rebuild in a few weeks maybe sooner

Yup, what the technition did who fitted my TrueTrac was knock a mark with a screwdriver on the end of the pinion, and the same on the pinion nut, before removing it, then when you torque it up, tighten till the marks align, don't go any more.  That way it was all OK.  That pinion nut took a 6ft long bar plus the length on the breaker bar to loosen, holy shit I thought that nut was not gonna move.
