Front axle help !!!
« on: June 27, 2008, 11:11:23 AM »

Hi all
I,m new to the jeep scene, so any help would be great.
My drivers side front drive shaft UJ needs replacing. Not a problem in its self.
The problem is which type do I need. I have been asked if my XJ has ABS or not. And guess what ? I do not know.
Can anyone help in trying to work out if I have it or not. Is there an easy way.
Thanks

When you turn on the ignition does an amber ABS light apear on the dash and then go out? Alternatively, open the bonnet and look top right for a component that has several brakelines coming out of it (about 5mm diameter, rigid metal pipes).

Or tell us what year, engine and gearbox you have and we should be able to tell you.

The difference is that non-ABS will have smaller Spicer 260 UJs and ABS should have larger 297 or 760 (same size) UJs.

If you look under your jeep between the uj flange and the back of the hub you will see a toothed wheel If thats not their you hav'nt got ABS you need a press or a good vice to change the UJ also check that they havn't been welded in as some have you will need to grind that off also you will need a 12 point 1/2 AF socket to remove the hub bolts  there was a thread earlyer this week about doing this job

Strictly speaking it's a 13mm but the 1/2" AF or a 1/4" whitworth fits quite well and they're a more common multi-point socket.

I've changed those UJs with socket and a BIG hammer before, although I would recommend a press, especiall if they haven't been changed recently.

Hi all  Many thanks for the advice. Most helpful. I took the bull by the horns and stripped down the axle. It has not got ABS. Oh and Yes it was a B***h to get the UJ out. I think it was an original from 1994. Well rusted in.
Anyway, once again for the help. All parts are now cleaned up and waiting the new UJ.
