Jeep WJ Shaking badly
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:28:09 AM »

Hi,

I was driving to work this morning and the car started juddering violently when I hit 60.  There was also a lot of noise, and the car behind me flashed me as if there was something visibly wrong.  I couldn't tell whether the noise was from the fromt or the rear, but it was pretty loud.

I limped to work at 50mph, and the vibration was only just noticable.  I would love it to be a weight that has departed a wheel, but fear that would be too simple (and cheap).

Any ideas?  I will have to leave it at the mechanics tonight, I cannot drive a 40 mile commute in it in that state.

Cheers

James

Well, it is sorted.  I am officially an idiot.  Never thought that there might be a great sodding lump of mud on the inside of the wheel rim........

Had that happen to me after a pay and play event a few years ago.Gave the truck a real good hose down, thought i had got all the crap off.Went down road no problem, but as soon as i got onto the motorway and put my foot down,it felt like my wheels were about to fall off.I shat myself, pulled over onto the hard shoulder to have a look and found huge clumps of mud welded to the inside of the rims. What a relief i can tell you..... :-?  :-?

Think about it, they balance wheels with 1/2oz weights.  This lump of mud weighed about 8 ounces all on one part of the rim.  Yep, it was extremely unbalanced!
