OK so I've taken this damn Jeep apart too much this last week or two. And its too soddin hot for wrenchin.   New wheel bearing, new diff bearings, old ones were rusty?, new rotors and pads.....then the calipers seized, new calipers, but I still got this anoying frigging noise out front, like whine/howl between 30-45 but all but disappears 45+. I happens on coasting too.  I also get a slight knock when I pull away.  Front prop has no play as far as I can tell.  The near side axle UJ has some play, like 1/2mm when I get a pry bar in there.  Offside tight w/no play.

You think this loose UJ could be the culprit?

Incidentally the diff bearings and both front axle UJ's were replaced by a so called Jeep specialist 10,000 miles ago.  Shoud they last more than 10K?

I dont think the UJ is the problem.  Sorry mate I think its more sinister than that.  If I lived in the UK I would lend ya a hand.

Have you checked the double carden joint on the front prop mate?

Mine was making a squeek/chirp noise a while ago. Tracked it down to that. rebuilt it with a kit from lighthouse. The noise was related to motion/ speed/tone.

10,000miles is a lot of miles especialy after youve been wheeling at kirton. That place kills joints and bearings. I have only done 6,000 miles in my froading TJ since I bought it 3 years ago. And the UJ's that dont allow you to grease dont last long. I found it better value to buy the more expensive spicer ones from lightouse that are greasable and service often.

I checked 'em, they don't seem to have any play at all, nor do the dinion bearings.  I ordered a UJ from lighthouse today for the axle, I'll get that in and see how it goes.

Mine didnt have any play either. Once my prop was removed I could hold the prop and rotate the double carden and I could feel the resistance. If done fast enough it would squeek. The UJ's and dont remember the correct name for the centre of the double carden joint, but they were grease once and forget kind as stock. basicaly they were all dried up and shot/worn.

Hope it turns out to be something as simple as this for you mate.

It's got some wierd name like a "double cardian, constant velocity joint", but you can call the wee bastid whatever you like, it's still not gonna come to you  :lol:

my double cardon started squeaking after some froading so i greased it with a neddle attachment for the grease gun.

Lifted the rubber boot and basically filled it, not sure its a permanent fix but its being quiet ever since

Put the propshaft in the passenger seat of your daily ride and tool round the local by-pass waiting for it to whisper in your ear 'Oi, mister, I'm fucked, fancy a quickie?'  :wink:

Bloody Hell, that's neat!
If I disconnect the rear shaft as well and tow the Jeep around the block would that eliminate engine noise too  :!:






AND before anyone tries that, I was being facetious BOTH times, that second suggestion is probably even more dangerous than it sounds, so DON'T do it!
(Steering lock, unboosted brakes, no PAS, etc, etc, it hardly bears thinking about, except as a laugh.)

yup. drop the front prop and you will know if it is that or not. finding a squeak is always a process of elimination unless somethin falls off.

Dont drop the rear prop either, less you got a SYE fitted

Well the knock was the right side sway bar link, somehow worked loose, I returned the UJ, as no point wasting time, so when I get 5 minutes I'll drop the front prop, need to get a Snap On 8mm flank drive plus wrench, everything else I used is shit and slips on the bolt head.

The other knock was the trackbar link at the axle end, new bolt, sorted.  Now onto this noise.  Convinced I don't have "angry sparrows".  Removed the propshaft, noise still there.  Everything pointing at pinion bearing, as the noise is road speed related, not load related, ie happens on coasting too.

Here's what it definatly isnt:  wheel bearings (because I replaced 1 and the other is good, carrier bearings because I replaced 'em (via dealership), brakes, calipers, propshaft.

Just to recap, i'm getting a slight vibes, and speed related bearing type noise between 25-50 mph, over 55 almost disappears.


So only leaves pinion bearings, and according to factory service manual diagnosis specifically front pinion bearing (or outer bearing) which correct me if I'm wrong is at the yoke side of the carrier behind the oil seal.
