As per title.
Also '98 4.0 Limited has a grumbling diff, surprise, surprise.Have been told that Forte diff treatment with synthetic GL5 diff oil can help.Anybody tried it or got comments regarding what they favour?

I'm new here so be gentle

As Daggie says, no LSD. Is it a Grand or a Cherokee?

If you did have one, then you need to add friction modifier from the Jeep dealer to the gear oil - best not to take chances using anything else. It's less than fiver for a bottle.

It's a 98 Cherokee, would the carrier bearing make it feel like it's takin' up the slack before if moves off??

What are the exact symptoms? Assuming it may or may not be the diff. What does the noise sound like? Where does it sound like it's coming from? Can you explain the 'taking up slack' a bit more?
Cheers.

Yeah not the best of explanations.
If ya pullin' away it feels like the back end's takin' up slack.Especially noticable if ya free wheelin' up to lights and they change so you throttle up.
There is a grumbling from the rear from 10mph+. Worst between 40-50 quietens down above 60 but ya still know it's there if you know what I mean :-?

Thinking about it as I type this wonder if the rear prop might account for the "slack".
I'll grease a few things up tomorrow.

You do not have a limited slip. Changing the oil will not relieve these symptoms.

Not sure about the Chrysler axle but on the Dana axle there should be two tags bolted on with the diff cover if it has a limited slip. The tag on the right has part number and gear ratio on it. If the tag is present on the left side it states something like LSD Friction modifier must be added.

Trac-Loc differentials were available on both axles. Your local Jeep dealer will be able to tell from your VIN if you have a limited slip or not.
