How much water do you use?

Had a bit of a surprise yesterday when I started my 98 4.0 grand and han a warning for coolant. The water pump was changed about 3 months ago and I topped it up about 4 weeks ago (I think). its just done a 500 mile trip to hampshire and back.

Is this about right? how often is everyone topping up water and by how much?

I'm not loosing it from anywhere and the oil appear clear with no mayo type deposits. Runs fine too (touch wood!)

I have a 4.0L Wrangler TJ and I've never had to top it up in over 2 years. :-)

I reckon you need to investigate yours a little bit more.

ive had to top mine up 3 times in the three years ive owned mine not including the rad replacement.

Not quite Jeep related but related to your problem.Had a BMW had the water pump go and so changed it,first time was losing water and found the gasket had twisted when putting it back on(was a right pain due to location),then once all sealed correctly found i still had to top up due to an airlock in the system.Did you follow the correct proceedure for filling back up the coolant system?I know there is one to prevent air locks,but you would need another to say what it is as im not sure.I wasnt losing water as such but it still needed topping up.Hope that helps?

Hi Tank, I'm kinda hoping thats what it is. The water pump was changed by a jeep specialist. I did top up a little about a week after it was done as they said to keep an eye on it. It's the first real decent run it's done as it generally only does a few miles a day.

I agree with tank.

have found with my Wrangler 4.0 that after any work done to the cooling system takes a long time to purge out any trapped air, even with bleeding through the heater hose or temperature sensor.

just monitor and top up as required and you will probably find that it will settle down after a few engine warm ups and cool downs.

very rarely but i know i have a small leak between the engine and the tranny thats comemon on zj's but im choosing to ignore it as its only minor.   im talking like 3/4 mths

Found the problem. Rad had a leak at the bottom under pressure.
