Transmission - servicing help required

Hi, Sorry for the rush but I'm in the middle of serviicng the transmission on a 99 WJ 4.0 (42RE?) and I'm off on a 1000 mile holday tomorrow, hence the rush.

It appears that the transmission filter that I've been given by the guys i get my stuff from is different to the filter that's already in - it's thicker and has the filter part in between an metal and plastic-sided housing. It fits on via 2 of the 3 original bolts and evrything, including the pan bolts back together OK. Am I in danger of knackkering the transmission if I use it or should it be safe enough? Should I just play safe and put back the original and get the proper one in due course?

I'm a little wary because it the bloodty thing's never been able to kick down satisfactorily, changing up at 3500rpm religiously, and I've never got to the bottom of the problem. I can get it to go above by manually using the gears, and for a while, afrer I drained off about 750ml of excess fluid from the last servicing it would go to 4000rpm if in cruise - go figure...

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help you can give me - I feel a late night coming on... Cheers!

don't know if this will help you but maybe you coud go to this site and get the correct part no then check it against what you have been supplied.

In general, unless the part is wrong to start with, you should be replacing it with one identical? Think if I were you i would put the original one back in, you don't want to start starving the box of oil due to incorrect filter.

Thanks, but doesn't have the part!  It might be sensible to err on the side of caution - I just don't know if it was a redesign or not.

That's for the 42RFE - the V8 one.  The one I've got is a different shape (42RE) - I assume mine is a generic filter as it should fit that gearbox, regardless of being slightly different in thickness and composition.

The WG's 42RE filter should have a metal and plastic housing. The bare teabag type one is for the earlier ZG version with the shallower oil pan.

Ooooohhh, I see...  Cheeky dealership must have put in an old one! Thanks Mike - I reckoned it owuld be OK, and it's certianly working better than it has done for me before!!
