Noise from Rear End - HELP!!
« on: August 26, 2008, 05:46:32 PM »

Hi All, newbie here!

I have a Dec 01 Cherokee 3.7 Sport Auto which I have owned for a few months now.

Just recently it has started making an awful 'droning' sort of noise from the rear which is really loud but only seems to be when your foot is on the pedal......Have tried coasting in Neutral and it stops.

I took it to the local garage who told me he thought it might be rear diff bearings although he doesn't work on 4x4's and this was his opinion from driving around the block!!

Is this a common problem or one that anyone else has had and if so whats my best course of action and what sort of wallet drain am I looking at because he suggested around £1000??

Hope someone can help to advise me!!

Many Thanks,

Simon

First off change the fluid in the diff, maybe take it to a decent garage and ask them to have a quick peek at the state of the diff & do the oil at the same time.

Where are you in N Wales?

OK Thanks for that.  Taking it to a guy who specialises in 4x4's up the road in Holywell.

I will get him to check the condition of the oil etc and see where we go from there!! 3-400 sounds a lot better than a 1000 though!!
