1996 2.5td cherokee starter motor

had the buggy for bout 8 weeks started no probs first time every time till a few days ago, starter motor has started being temprimental, some times works no probs, sometimes the motor spins but its like the solenoid isnt moving on to the flywheel, is this common, aqny thought much appreciated!? cheers!!

Not unusual, the ring gear can also fail. Both are a bugger to fix.

jack the engine and remove the right hand engine mount to get the motor out, not a bad job just there is not alot of room to play with.

have the starter out and strip and clean and re-grease it. worth a try.

If you take the starter out make sure you check all the teeth on the ring gear for damage.

I always  thought starters were supposed to be dry ie no grease as any bits get caught on the grease this is what jams the bendix

just try and keep them dry when your froading and going through water etc
