Side mirror and driver's seat settings
« on: December 10, 2008, 11:00:09 AM »

Does anyone know how to stop the side mirrors on a 98 Grand and the passenger seat resetting themselves everytime I lock the car. I wondered if its anything to do with me having an old key fob?

thanks

They're not reseting themselves, they're putting themselves back to the position that was last programmed into them. The manual explains how to change and keep the new mirror settings.

I've had Jeep look at them..... to no avail.....

I've watched them do it, definitely when I unlock the car, which makes sense I guess.... it'd assume the last driver in would be the next driver in, so leave them where they were...... only when you unlock the car would it know which key had unlocked it. Strange thing is, I've moved my seat on  purpose on exit before locking the car..... then unlocked it with the same key... the seat moves to where it should be but the mirrors default to 'down' as they either can't sense where they are now so have no reference point and default to down, or simply can't remember where they are supposed to go .....

Well I got the Grand second hand two years ago so didnt get a manual. Even my mechanic (who is superb) at the local garage couldnt figure it out. He had the same make and model and couldnt figure it out.

I know there is settings buttons on the driver's door. But I couldnt work out what was what.

Just had a propper watch of mine, and does the same thing. As soon at the alarm is disabled and the central locking opens, both front mirrors lower

Our 2002 Grand did this (before the car stopped working completely), mainly on the driver's side.  I tried all sorts of experiments but nothing seemed to help.  IIRC, and it was a while ago so please forgive me, the mirrors seemed to drop by a set amount.  So if I pointed them right to the top before I locked the car they wouldn't be right at the bottom on unlocking.

Never did find out why it happened though - I'd be interested to find out a cause.

This is a common problem with the Mirrors on Grands.

Prozac is right when he says "the seat moves to where it should be but the mirrors default to 'down' as they either can't sense where they are now so have no reference point and default to down, or simply can't remember where they are supposed to go .....". In fact it is because they can't sense where they are now. The sensors within the mirror that let it know where it is become faulty. I have heard of people on other Forums, dismantling the mirror and cleaning the sensors with mixed results. The only real cure is to replace the mirror, however due to the costs, I will just make do with having to move both mirrors myself every time I unlock the Jeep. Even though it is a pain every time.

Regards.
