2002 2.7 CRD gearbox , engine management warn.light on
« on: January 12, 2009, 08:04:04 PM »

2002 Jeep Grand 2.7 CRD - 95.000 miles.
Love the car (my 2nd after having had a 1999 4.8 V8)
Today engine management warning light came on, low on power puling away after having to stop at junctions, and gearbox did not shift up past 3rd gear.    Think I've got a bit of a problem here.  Any possible causes ?
Can I do any further damage if I drive any further??

Turn the ignition key until the digital odometer displays, repeat three times in succession and then back to "On" (On/Off, On/Off, On/Off, On). At the fourth "On" the odometer will be replaced with codes. If no codes are present then "Done" will appear.

It will give a 5 character code/s, post it here

I suspect it is working properly. There may be another way to get the code for your model. Other that know more than me will be along shortly to help.

Try this http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html it has a bit more detail on how to do it.

Got it !!!!

On the 2002 Grand CRD you have to turn the key  on-off-on-off-on in quick succession within 5 seconds.  Spread the word !!!!!

3 fault codes came up in quick succession so have a pen and paper ready.

Nos: 702 - 620 - 340    8-)     http://wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm

Many thanks Tim.[/b]

702 is a transmission related code and the fact that it is in limp mode confirms that the transmission control module thinks there is a fault. There is no way of interrogating the transmission controller without either a dealer's DRBIII scan tool or a very advanced aftermarket scanner with specific Jeep software. There were some issues with communication between the Mercedes transmission control and Jeep powertrain control modules which can make communication difficult. I would suggest taking it to a Jeep dealer and get them to run a proper diagnostic. They will have the technical information and any relevant software to hand. It might just need a software update.

Mike, Tim,

Thanks guys....you've been a big help.  Called my garage this morning (non Jeep) and he advised like Mike to hook it up to the Jeeps' garage diagnostic computer....grab the slip with the results ...and get out of there like the clappers.  He even stressed........DO NOT LET THEM TOUCH THE CAR!!!!.

Whatever the computer says he can deal with at a fraction of the price so thats ok.

Seems that whatever country you're in, everybody thinks the same about the Jeep dealer.

Appointment is on Friday so will keep you posted.

Cheers

Actually, Jeep parts and dealers are quite cheap over here. Perhaps that's why Chrysler is just about to go belly up. (Oh and shit, unreliable cars).

 :-D  :-D  :P  :P

Took the grand to the Jeep dealer with one gearbox past its sell by date, plugged it into the computer, checked fault memory, cleared the fault codes, found dtc's (whtever they are) found flash update, roadtested, checked memory, all ok...customer to monitor.

And all for the princely sum of £32,-- + a nice capucino and a free carwash.

Life is sweet...life is Jeep.
