Clutch Operated Immobiliser
« on: November 25, 2008, 01:01:17 PM »

Can anyone please give me a clue?
I have a 98 Grand Cherokee Loredo 2.5TD and the immobiliser is bypassed by pushing the clutch pedal down as far as possible, this then enables me to start the vehicle.
Now all of a sudden, pressing the clutch down as far as possible does not allow me to start it, the battery is fine and there is no key fob issue, I believe that its a factory fit immobiliser.

Regards

Check which ever switch is on the back of the clutch pedal doesn't need adjusting.

Does the diesel ZJ have cruise? If it does, then by-passing the clutch switch would be a bit dangerous!

I thought this was a micro switch fitted on manual US vehicles to stop folk from starting the jeep in gear and plowing over people in the mall car parks :-?

Is the immobiliser not just deactivated by the keyfob?

your right tartanzj, its an electrical isolation  circuit for those americans not used to having a clutch and gearlever that moves more than one direction, its one of those things they just have to have to stop them killing each other.
on the point of using a cruise control here, you have to bear in mind that you need to be doing a crusing speed to do it,not tearing along  the outer lane watching peoples brake lights, C/control can be used  most places, dual carriageways even single carriagewaysas long as you are abover 30mph-35mph it will engage, I use it most days

The clutch switch has nothing to do with the imobiliser. It it just there as a saftey mechanism to stop you turning the key and the vehicle lurching forward like others have said. On TJ's there is a bypass plug to trick it into reading a circuit so that you dont have to press the clutch to start. I would have thought the same applied to all other jeeps???? Its quick and easy to do, Done it on my TJ (As I want it to stay in gear and start at times while offroading).

If you bypass the switch it will at least let you know if it is the switch on the clutch stopping you from starting or your imobiliser.

I’ve just been having a quick look around for an answer to the Clutch Interlocking Ignition System and I came up with this photo lifted off jeepforum.com for the early TJs.

From around 1998/9 onwards, this method was replaced by inserting a 10amp fuse in slot 20 in the under-dash fuse block and it changed again during the last couple of years of production when you have to insert a 10amp fuse into slot 28 fuse block under the engine bonnet. The only problem with the last method is that it leaves the 4wd light on on the dash all the time, so the other solution is to make a jump lead to bypass the switch down at the pedal.

I’ve also read that starting the vehicle in 4wd and shifting it back into 2wd once started can be a temporary solution to some starting problems caused by the clutch interlock system.

I’ve no idea if this will help with your problem on the Grand Cherokee though!

Just another thought, although your symptom could be due to a bad clutch safety switch, it doesn't mean it is. A bad starter relay could cause the same thing, as could problems within the key cylinder, steering column, and ignition switch.

Thanks Daggie

Thanks for the tip, I did as you said, pulled the two wires off and joined them with a connector.
No problem starting and Cruise control still works fine from 40 MPH onwards.

Once again

Thanks

When shorting the clutch switch on a manual Jeep with Cruise control, the cruise control will not switch off when the clutch is depressed, as it's supposed to.

nope it won't but then you can just touch the brake switch which is also connected to the system or flick it off on the stalk...

I was wrong. I was confusing the OEM cruise with aftermarket, which I'd need to add cruise control to my 97 TJ as the PCM isn't programmed for it.
