European homologation number
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:48:15 PM »

Hi i need a European homologation number for my 1986 CJ7 or a certificate of conformity. My Jeep is originally from California and was then exported to Germany and finally i bought it in Spain in 2002. Since then i have been trying to get it registered on Spanish plates but without any joy. All i need now is the number or certificate, or even just to be told where it might be hidden on the jeep itself. I am told it will start with an " E * numbers then letters". If anyone could help me out it will end a 7 year nightmare and i can drive my jeep without fear of losing it.

Thanks Stu.

If it was originally sold in California it will not have European type approval and the manufacturer will not issue a certificate of conformity for a non European market vehicle so you're out of luck there. Your only hope is if you have german registration documents for it, in which case you should be able to register it in most other European countries without too much trouble. Otherwise you need to see if Spain has a procedure for registering collectors cars and imports.

Thanks for that Mike. I'm not suprised that there wouldn't be a straight forward solution but the Spanish are so fickle if i had a plate made with the correct corresponding number fitted somewhere on the jeep they would pass it immediately, only i can't find anything on the german paperwork either with the number on...deads ends all round.

Cheers Stu.

I would've thought that being an EU country, if it had been registered in another member state already it shouldn't be a problem, then again, EU rules seem to be designed to annoy the British while the other states ignore them and make their own.

Exactly and unfortunately Spain stills acts as if Franco is still in charge in lots of ways.

I'm shooting from the hip here but I don't believe they had the certificate of conformity back in 1986.

Thanks gent's. I think you could be correct about 86 being too long ago, a friend of mine mentioned that and i may well give the Chrysler option a go if nothing else (free) turns up.

Much obliged.
