XJ starts then dies after few seconds
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:13:13 PM »

I have a 99 4ltr orvis XJ with a strange starting problem.

It would start up first turn of the key and run for a few seconds then just die. If you start it again it will start up and just die again.

Ok so I suspect the crank position sensor, so I un-plug and clean the connector and try again, but no change.  So then I disconnect the battery for a minute to clear the CPU and re-connect, it starts and runs and we get home.

Problem is the fault is still there; it will not start unless I disconnect the battery first, then it will run with engine check light out and all the gauges working but the airbag light on. As soon as I stop the engine it reverts back to “start and die” with the check engine light on.

Any idea where to start with this one???

Plug in an OBD2 scanner to see what fault codes you are getting.

Could be a SKIS fault.

What a load of bollocks that is. Is the SKIS light flashing?

I’m not aware of where the sentry light is, but when it wont run the check engine light is on, also the airbag light, so that kind of indicates a fault condition somewhere.

I’ve got the spare key so I will try that tomorrow just to see, the battery on this one seems ok the central locking all works fine off it.

Looks like I need one of these fault code readers regardless of how this turns out, any recommendations on the type to buy, or would a cable for a laptop and appropriate software be the better way?

Thanks for any help

The SKIS light is an orange key in a circle with a line through it.

Yeah it has plenty of fuel in it, (half a tank), and yes I can hear the pump run, as I say it does start and will rev for 3 seconds, If I disconnect the battery to clear the cpu it will run as long as we want but wont restart again once it has been turned off, the only warning light while it is running like that is the airbag warning light.

Last night I went through every multi connector I could find in the engine bay and un-plugged and re-plugged them a few times, just 2 big ones up against the drivers side bulkhead that refused to come apart. I also did the 3 big connectors to the CPU module.

Anyway nothing changed, fault still the same, so reading here and other jeep forums in America someone mentioned that a leaking fuel cap can cause funny effects and put out an error code regards emissions, so what the hell I had a look at the cap to see if it was on tight and it clicked onto the lock position, so it wasn’t actually sealed,  hmmm.

So for one last time, take battery off/on and start up, it runs as expected, so switch off and start up again and it runs fine with no warning lights, WTF you’ve got to be kidding me the bloody petrol cap.

Well the jeep started fine this morning after the coldest night so far and away she went all day, I cant help but think that was a pure coincidence and the fault has cleared for now but will be back.

Any thoughts???

Oh I forgot to add the SKIS key light has never stayed on, thanks Mike

Had a Capri back in the day, died on the way to work one morning. Sat there scratching my head having checked for anything obvious / disconnected & got the Haynes manual out for ideas.

It said undo the petrol cap, replace & try & start it, bugger me it worked !!

Probably not the same as yours but you never know  8-)

I know the petrol cap has an effect in the EGR system, but I would not think that it would stop the car starting.

Bloody computers!
