air con converion to on board air
« on: October 28, 2009, 05:30:23 PM »

has anyone done this conversion? the new engine has come with a aircon pump and was thinking an air system would be usefull, i have a small tank to use.

alternative was to fit a second alternator for the second battery so as to have 2 separate systems.

Nick, the pics would be cool, don't mind how, mod old thread or re post in this or a new.

Peter, I do have a small elec pump that would fill a small tank but trying to avoid elec powered unless I go for the twin alternator/battery option

I too wanted to avoid the elec route and had a friend with a York compressor on his  engine however didn't wan't to trade. I ended up with a very good kit from an Aussie firm in UK called B.O.A.B. (they are googleable) but like you was probably going to go the route of Kilby etc like this http://www.kilbyenterprises.com/compressors.htm

Oasis......... Love it like a winch motor attached to a Kilby/York compressor will run air tools so I am told... Heavy?

Nosebolt original first entry from other thread, if you want any more information or different photo's let me know :-

Hi,
This is a mod that I built to remove the ARB electric compressor.  It still runs the air lockers in the front and rear diffs but allows me to reinflate my tires from 15/16 PSI to 28 PSI in about 1 minute per tire.

Aircon pump manifold / Bracket

Alternator mode to run pump

Mist oiler + Coalescing filter

Storage Bottles under floor

Relay + Pressure switch + Solenoid Valves

Gauges in cab

The gauges are going to be moved into a pod when I get chance to fibre glass one, and at the same time I will incorporate some LED's to illuminate the gauges in the dark.

Thanks for looking

Cheers

Nick, do you have a shopping list for parts needed or did you get a 'kit'? i have the aircon pump and a choice of tanks so far, assumed i needed a pressure release, hadn't thought about an oil mister etc.

I just brought the bits I needed at the pneumatics supplier sort of on the fly, I will do a list of the bits that are sort of essential tonight, fittings and actual pipe are going to depend on what / how elaborate you want to get.  I will reference them to the airlines and pneumatics site so you can see them, but you will probably find them as cheap at a local pneumatics supplier.

i like this thread i have a v8 at the side of my shed with an air con pump on it but  the only thing that puts me off is that for all the messing about you have not got much more ability than your electric air pump apart from being able to use air tools and thats very cool septin you already carry all the hand tools that will slowly do the same work as air tools apart from needing extra storage for the air tools i also find that some cordless impact guns charge very fast to the point if you have to batteries you wont run out of tool time
i like on board air but i am no longer certain that it is entirely worth the  effort and expense

Converted my YJ's A/C into OBA a couple of years ago. Kilby's filter, Machine Mart (MM) drip oiler, MM air/oil filter, T off to the tanks (my tube bumpers), manifold with pressure gauge + hoses off to the front and rear quick connects and ARB solenoids.

Worth the effort, imo.

Originally I had the ARB compressor and you could get an inflation kit for it to blow up tyres but I would probably have retired before I finished.  The air through put from the engine mounted one is quite significantly higher.  Unless you go to the size and expense of the Oasis as posted by IOM it is an affordable alternative.  I needed air anyway to run the lockers so it might not be so appealing if you want to just blow up tires although it has come in useful with the ladies at work on a few occassions when they have a flat tire.  I don't tend to run air tools that often but it is useful if I am trying to drill a hole or something to just be able to plug it into the jeep.

Nosebolt, basics of what I have;

Most of the plumbing is 8mm Polyamide pipe into pushfit connectors as this made life easy and its also simple to replace/alter something.  The lines to the guages are 3mm from memory as this was easier to route through the bulkhead to the dashboard.

The manifold on the back of the compresor is just a piece of 1/2" aluminium that I drilled and then tapped 1/4" BSP to accept the pushfit fittings.

The inlet to this manifold runs from a drip oiler / mister that is filled with air tool oil, this is to lubricate the aircon compressor as it would normally be cooled / lubricated by the flow of refrigerant.  I have a small air filter on the inlet pipe too the mister to stop dust / crap getting to the compressor.

the mister is similar to this one but a lot cheaper, you should be able to source locally, mine has a flow adjuster to fine tune the delivery;

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S050142

Once the air/oil misture has gone through the compressor you need to remove it from the air this is were the coalescing filter comes in, again the link below shows a product but you should be able to source it locally.

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S050197

Once the cleaned air leaves the coalescing filter I have a soleniod valve, this unloads the pressurized side of the compressor to reduce the load on it when it is starting up, this bit is optional,  it is just wired in parallel to the magnetic clutch so that when the clutch is in the vent is closed.

The link below shows the type of thing but they are available far cheaper that this, it just connects to a T to vent the line, all you need is 12vdc soleniod normally open.

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S07012110

After the solenoid valve is the check valve to allow air into the system but not out so that the solenoid valve only drains the compressor and not the whole circuit.  If you arent using the soleniod valve I would still fit one of these or you are dependant on the compressor being a perfect seal.

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S070135

After this check valve my lines split into high pressure and low pressure sides, the bottles and pressure switch are on the HP side and the ARB / tools, etc are on the lower pressure regulated side.

to regulate the pressure down I just have a mini diaphragm regulator:-

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S050138

the high pressure side has the safety valve in to prevent anything going pop if the pressure switch fails.

Pressure switch similar to this although I paid about £20, also I use the switch to run a relay to avoid damage.

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S07014420

Pressure relief valve like below, mines 160 PSI

http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S070140

Think thats about it if you need anything else just ask.
