XJ Cherokee wheels & Tyres
« on: January 09, 2009, 07:41:49 PM »

I have a '99 XJ Cherokee 4.0 Limited in standard spec except for an LPG conversion. I've recently found it very difficult to get decent AT tyres in the original size, (225/70R15).

I don't do any 'hard-core' off-roading but do spend about 30% of my time  on rough farm tracks, crossing fields etc. Often with a bit of a load in the back. Yes, this is a working Jeep.

I'm thinking that I should get a set of 16" wheels to give me better tyre choice. If this is a wise move, are there other Jeep wheels that will bolt straight on with no further mods?

It would also benefit from a slight (perhaps 2") lift, but for reasons of marital harmony   This will have to wait until after the tyre/wheel change.

Thanks in advance.

You can fit 235/75R15 tyres on it with no mods, other than the speedo being a bit out. Make sure your rear springs don't sag though.

Some XJs came with 215/70/15 (like my Dad's 2000 2.5 petrol model) and 225/75/15, 235/70/15  or 235/75/15 will also fit. The change in gearing will be minimal. If the rear springs are badly sagged you may get a little rubbing on the plastic wheel arch when bouncing around offroad but it's nothing too bad (I had it on mine for a while until I replaced the springs for diesel ones).

I found these General Grabber AT2s searching the website I recently got tyres from:

They're in the size your want and are well reviewed by plenty of Jeepers

Thanks for the link JamesH. I did try these guys (back in November) and was told they were out of stock. Maybe they're back in now.

I got a pair of these Kumho 825's for a decent price at DPH in Bathgate, if they are near you. They may be able to source you other tyres if you preffer.

Hi Mack.
Thanks for the info. I've used Kumho 825s on the XJ and they're not a bad tyre. However, once again back in November I was told that these were no longer in stock.

Admittedly, that was by Ostlers in Galashiels not DPH but they swore that they'd searched their contacts and not found any in Scotland. Maybe I was had, but time pressures were against me and in the end I opted for a pair of Kenda Klevers. Cheap but crap. Plug up with mud too easily and on-road make the XJ's 'legendary'   directional stability a touch worse.

Following advice and further thought, I've decided to go down the 16" wheel route and taken up garyf's offer of some used alloys.

Cheers,
