Got recovered a couple of weeks ago in the (silver) XJ . Smoke coming from front offside wheel, so i presume its going to be a brake caliper -- or any other thoughts .

Its a sticking caliper, had the same on our TJ, had it stripped & cleaned but didn't last, had a new caliper, problem solved.
Get it sorted or you may cook / warp your discs, though they are pretty substantial beasties

My TJ brakes did the same refurbed the caliper and it still kept sticking when it felt like it.
New caliper.......job done

got an exchange one from the local factors to me for £60, not worth rebuilding them yourself at that price

Take the callipers off & chuck em over the fence, then go on ebay US & get a set of new replacements (got mine for less than £50, after a tip on this site) probably 60 now.
I spent around £60 (l'house kits, paint, washers etc), & several hours refurbing & rebuilding my original ones & they were still junk. I know its a throw away mentality but in this case its cheaper & guaranteed to work right.
