Jeep cherokee 4.0l cutout prob
« on: February 28, 2009, 09:17:12 PM »

Hi Guys
recently got hold of an Orvis cherokee 4.0L , 2000 reg( 2 weeks )
Bloody thing cutout on me today , refused to start for ages, checked the coil and leads, checked fuel getting through.. all ok .. will replace cap leads and plugs as a matter of course. I have been reading some posts on other forums and google (has to be done ) and there seems to be a general consensus that the Crankshaft Position sensor is the culprit . Has anyone on here had similar experience and found the solution . The car started after about an hour and ran fine , but I am scared to take the thing very far now in case it goes again , sort of takes the shine off a new car . will post some piccis soon for you all to see.
Any help is greatfully recieved.
I have a reasonble understanding of the electrical system and I am quite capable of testing bits and pieces.
cheers guys

seems to be a general prob for this model .. will test tomorrow and let you all know what transpires.
I am hoping it is as simple as that.

hi phil,  had exactly the same symptoms on my previous cherry 1996 .. p reg .  start from cold it would run perfect, after about 20 mins would start missing , spluttering @ wouldnt rev up cleanly. changed plugs , leads , cap , @ rotor arm. still the same. then changed crank sensor @ cured the problem. cam sensor could be at fault,  but try crank 1 st.  p.s jeep was 4.0 auto  .   ope this helps m8  happy jeeepin .

Hi Cherry
Changed the CPS first , got it running , then changed everything else. I was gonna renew all the ignition stuff anyways as I have only just got the jeep 2 weeks ago. Next stage is to do 2 or 3 oil changes over a period to get the oilways all nice and clean. I do have a slight rumble on the rer axle also .. so amybe new bearing there if a grease up don't work.. The vehicle is generally lacking lubricants from the previous owners.. but with a bit of TLC it will be running all smooth again .

At 90 quid for a cps .. I can't see me keeping one under the seat lol.

I blessed the new one with spirit when I installed it ( southern comfort

Will post some piccis up over the next few days as I have just fitted some side steps and sorta polished it up .

£90 for a CPS - thats got to be some sort of record! Who sold it to you, Gordon Brown or Alisair Darling?

Hi eastry
my local friendly expensive jeep dealer, as per usual. none of the local factors to me could get one.And as I have never changed one before and had no idea what it looked like I wanted somehwere local in case I had to return it .. had loads of probs with my last jeep getting the right parts.

I have seen em around for as little as 40 quid, is that about right then?
