Grand Cherokee mot failure on headlamp beam pattern???
« on: February 18, 2009, 06:07:18 PM »

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 1997 and it has just failed the mot on the headlamps. They are saying both beam patterns are incorrect and that there is no “Kick-up” to the left on dip, they even suggested that the bulbs might be in upside down! They only go in one way. From the information I have seen only European spec lamps have this feature and that the “American-British” type (no E mark) which I have fitted, have a virtually flat beam pattern with no kick-up. It has passed previous mots without this problem, I did not contest it at the time as I thought I had better get my facts together first.

Basically should I contest this failure? The lamps are correct for the vehicle they dip and main beam correctly, that’s it! There is no more! Are these lamps legal in this country? It is a 1997 model new into this country at that time and always had these lamps, although replaced about 2 years ago with like for like. Is this a case of a bit of mot tester education?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers
John

As far as the MoT test is concerned there is no requirement for headlamps to be E marked and as yours are not E marked lamps, the tester should test them in accordance with the tester's manual regarding the two alternative beam patterns available with British-American headlamps. The tester's manual is quite clear on this. Your Jeep should not have failed unless they were incorrectly aimed when tested to these criteria.

Look here for details......
