4.0 I6: Changing a water pump
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:29:36 AM »

Had to do this because of a leak (the bottom of the bottom hose was dripping due to a leak at the gasket on the bottom of the water pump), so I thought I'd put a quick how to incase anyone else needs to in the future (and doesn't know how)

Local factors did the water pump and gasket for £35 all in.

1/ Loosen the nut holding the top bolt on the alternator.
2/ Loosen the adjustor on the alternator and slip the serpentine belt off the power steering pump

3/ Undo the 16mm pipe fitting for the power steering pump, unclip the plug from the top of the pump
4/ Undo the spring clip holding on the power steering pump return pipe
5/ With a bolt in hand, pull the rubber pipe off the power steering return pipe and block the rubber pipe with the bolt to stop the fluid being lost

6/ Undo the 2 13mm bolts holding on the plastic shrowd over the fan.
7/ With a long big flat screw driver to jam between the nut and the fan to stop the viscous unit spinning and with a 13mm ratchet spanner, undo the 4 nuts holding on the whole viscous unit (NOT the 4 bolts holding on the fan)
8/ In one go, lift the fan and the shrowd out of the engine bay watching that the fan doesn't hit the rad
9/ Take off the serpintine belt
10/ Take off the pulley from the front of the water pump (it's loose now)
11 / Undo the 15mm bolt on the idler next to the alternator and take it off

12/ With a long reach socket undo the 3 long 13mm bolts holding on the power steering pump
13/ Lift the power steering pump out to one side
14/ Undo the 3 bolts holding on the braket for the power steering pump

15/ Undo the spring clip by the no/1 spark plug for the water pipe heading to the water pump.
16/ Undo the spring clip holding the bottom hose to the water pump.

17/ Undo the 4 bolts (there's one right at the bottom) for the water pump.
18/ Flip off the bottom hose and top hose (from by no.1 spark plug) and remove the water pump. Have a large bucket underneath to catch the antifreeze in.

19/ With a sharp scraper, clean all traces of old gasket from around the block so that it's all nice and clean for the new gasket.

20/ With a vice, undo the top hose from the water pump (19mm)
21/ Using the nuts which were taken off the water pump for the viscous fan, lock 2 nuts together and wind out the studs, these are needed for the new pump.

22/ On the new pump, wind in the 4 studs, and put the top hose on.

23/ smear the surface of the water pump with a small amount of instant gasket, and then put the gasket on, then smear the face of the gasket with a little more.

24/ Put the water pump on, nip all 4 bolts up then tighten evenly to pull the pump against the gasket against the block in an even pull.

25/ Place the pulley back on the water pump, and loosely put the serpentine belt on (it's easier to do this now before the fan is put on)

26/ Stick it all back together

27/ Top up the power steering since a little will have leaked out, and re-fill with a strong mix of antifreeze.

28/ Adjust the serpentine belt so that there's 90 degree twist over the longest run.

All in all, it's, with a cup of tea and no hurrying an hour and a half job, and quite easy to do with minimal tools.

Soooo nice to not have a damp bottom hose :D

Cripes!
AMC 6/258 much easier, except the ruddy pump costs a fortune!
Good write up, but maybe too many words for me, I got confused when it didn't say reassembly is the opposite of removal  :-D
