I have an oil leak on my front diff from the cover, so I'm going to remove the cover, clean it and reseal and then add new oil.  The problem I have is that the oil is a special type and non of my local factors stock it.  Not surprisingly the dealer wants lots of money for it!  The oil for the front is 75w-140 (think i need 2 litres) and the rear is 80w-90 (again 2 litres).  Stealership want 14.70+VAT for 1 litre  on front and 5.20+VAT for 1 litre on rear (that doesnt seem too bad).

Can anyone suggest somewhere I can get this from at a slightly more reasonable price?!

Probably needs about 1.5 litres in each. 75w140 can be tricky to find but 80w90 should be stocked in most motor factor. However the dealer prices aren't stupidly high, diff oil can be quite expensive, especially bought in 1 litre bottles.

Would this http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-736-castrol ... icant.aspx be an ok oil to use, or is the 75w-140 different in a Jeep (and therefore better to get from main dealer) to other cars that need this type of oil?  Especially as until the end of today this company is offering free shipping!

That stuff looks pretty good to me, it's the right numbers, fully synthetic, graded to GL-5 and says it's for high pressure LSD applications so I'd use it in mine.

Is there anything I should be aware of when doing this job?  Anything I should look for or do when I have the diff covers off (I think i've read somewhere about spraying inside the diff with brake cleaner)?

Dont forget that you will need an additive for your limited slip diff if quadradrive fitted.

If you are plotting off roading at some point think of a SOLID diff cover scrw might have a few left...

I do have Quadradrive - can you help me with what additive I need to add and what it does?

I have to admit I havent ever been offroading, but I cant wait to do it!  I know I need to beef up the underside a little bit.  Have you got the uprated diff covers and do they take more of a beating than the standard ones?  I guess I also need to look at some sump and autobox armour.  Is there anything else I should think about making stronger?

I'd look for protection in the middle of your Jeep - transfercase and autobox. Armoured diff covers are probably the secod stage IMO. Most muddy lanes, tree roots etc. won't badly damage the standard covers but rock crawling, wading in water with rocks and really 'wellying' it through obstacles might cause problems.

RE: oil, I just read a lube guide for Jeeps on another forum and it stated 75w140 GL5 synthetic in both axles if quadra drive fitted and diff additive in both. Diff additive can be bought from the dealer for about £5 a bottle, normally 1-2 bottles in each axle.

Tip for removing diff covers:

Place basin or suitable container under diff, undo all cover fixing bolts. If cover appears to be sealed on, leave it, and put the kettle on, have a brew and then return to easily take cover off.

Must be to do with letting the oil soak through the previously compressed seal.......

partco will stock the oil you need at a good price. additive from jeep is required in  anythin with an lsd.

Just done my Grand's diffs used 80/90 and additive in both. The bolts on the top of the rear are easier to remove with the anti roll bar undone and dropped down, well it was for me.
